We had the good fortune of connecting with Bee Aub and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bee, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks is the most important thing to do in life. Pushing yourself forward, taking the step no one has done before. Everyday is a risk when you are operating a local business here in Miami. I was told time and time again that specializing in curly hair would not be a lucrative business idea. I put everything I had into my business, I risked failing and losing everything. Just like the many women we serve every day that take the big risk by embracing their natural hair. They inspire me to keep pushing forward, break stereotypes, to go into the unknown, and knock down all the walls that have been put around women in business for so long.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My journey was not an easy one, it definitely consisted a lot of trail and errors which constantly pushed me out of my comfort zone. I was only 21 and grew up in a Caribbean household where they told me college was the only way to be considered successful. Dropped out of college enrolled into Beauty school and worked two jobs to pay off loans. When I first started my career in 2019, Curl Specialist was still in its early stage and there weren’t as many mentors or information on what and what not to do. I opened up my own studio where I lived and worked. Yes! I lived upstairs slept in am air mattress and had my own salon downstairs. No one knew, because I wanted to give that salon experience to my clientele I just knew I had to take risk in order to expand my business, if I kept being consistent, showing up everyday it will pay off. As my art translated through hair, my service expanded thats when I privately opened up my own products and hired my first employee in 2020. Today, I have a bigger salon with 3 stylist, married to an incredible husband, had a beautiful daughter, and started Bee Blondor Academy that has lots of new upcoming projects on the way! This goes to show you, you don’t have to be the smartest, most talented or have a perfect plan to start. What you need is to just do it and stay consistent with it. Be patient, hard working and just believe in yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my out of town friends visit, love to show them around visit Biscayne Park to have a picnic. After we would head over to the Wynwood grab some Italian Vice, and later board a yacht to Nixon’s sandbar. For dinner we’ll head straight to Zuma for the best sushi! You can’t end the night without some music, so I’d go to KiKi’s on the river for some fun drinks and dancing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Carla and Julie. Working around these women everyday inspires me to work harder for not only myself but for them as well. Owning a local business shows you exactly who benefits from all of our loyal customers. I work hard so that everyone can have a safe work environment, be treated fairly, and feel comfortable in themselves to push their own boundaries. I learn so much from the women I surround myself with, where there is trust, there is room to grow. Now being a new mom and a business owner, I look towards the mothers I work with to guide me when I am feeling stressed and overwhelmed. When I feel like giving it they inspire me to keep going forward. Coming into work everyday and seeing strong, independent women of color servicing our community inspires me to never give up.
