We had the good fortune of connecting with RoseMarie Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi RoseMarie, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love being creative. Watching my grandmother making quits and crocheting inspired me to learn the skill. She always seemed so calm and relaxed while crocheting. My grandma, mom and aunt introduced crocheting to me at a young age.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from the others is that I don’t use patterns, I’m a freehand crochet designer, I create all of my designs on my own. I’ve been crocheting for 22years, none of this happened over night. I’ve always wanted to have something to do with the fashion industry, it’s a dream come true.

I’m most proud of myself for not giving up. I got where I’m am by believing in myself. It’s hasn’t been easy at all. Being a busy mom of six can get a little challenging when I have to travel for shows. I’m lucky to have a husband that understands my dream. He’s very proud of me.

Some of my challenges were people telling me “crocheting was only a hobby and not a business.” And I shouldn’t take it serious. I was turned away from doing shows at different venues because of the “type” of clothing I created I guess the swimwear scared some people away lol.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way are, speaking up for myself in my brand will make people look at me business/brand different.

I want the world to know that Yubehandmade has been in business for 22 years and will be around for many years to come. YUBE Yarn Collection as well.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the ocean, the sound is so calming. Put the phone down and watch the sunset. It’s so beautiful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a little credit to my husband and children for being so patient with me. I have to travel for shows a lot. Crochet is something I have to sit down and do, so I would like to thank my children for understanding that I have to take my yarn with me everywhere I go sometimes lol. My mom, aunt and grandma for teaching me a life long skill that started me on this pathway.
