We had the good fortune of connecting with Vikee Koh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vikee, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve never been one to fit the mold. A square peg. I don’t like boundaries. Being a creative in an non creative environment feels like it kills my soul a little at a time.
Surrounding myself with fellow creatives give me inspiration. I want to be free and do what I love. What I’m good at. What brings me joy.
Writing and photography allow me to express myself.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I can’t remember ever not loving to write. Short stories, poetry, diaries… Anything just to express myself through words. I didn’t start writing professionally until later in life.
I started my blog Living La Vida Diva eight years ago.
The main focus of my blog is fashion, another lifelong love of mine.
When I began, most of the fashion bloggers were young, tall, blond and skinny. I was none of those things.
I had to work harder and longer. Yet I still stayed true to my own style.
When I find something or someone enjoy I want to share it with the world.
Several people have noted that reading my blog is like having a conversation with me.
That’s exactly what I want.
I patterned my blog style after the writings of the late André Leon Talley..
I loved reading his articles in Vogue and felt as if he were telling me a story each time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d definitely take them exploring in Uptown Charlotte. The museums, the food trucks, the festivals…there’s always something new to discover each time I’m there.
I also do a lot of food blogging. To me it’s a combination of great food and a great experience. Crave Dessert Bar, Deluxe Fun Dining and Poplar Tapas•Wine•Spirits are three of my favorites spots. Perfect for celebrations, date nights or girls night out!
I can’t let them leave without seeing ‘The Green’. If you love to read, this playful, book themed park is a must.
There are quotes by famous writers and many whimsical direction signs pointing to real places but combined to form the name of well-known authors, for example, signs pointing to Edgar (Wisconsin), Allan (Saskatchewan), and Poe (Alberta).
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends have supported me from day one. They’re my biggest cheerleaders. I also have a Mentor and a crew I call my ‘Spiritual Gangsters’ that keep me on the right path.
