We had the good fortune of connecting with Bailey Mateer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bailey, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born and raised in Orlando, Florida – one of the top tourism destinations in the United States. I grew up in a household with a very determined entrepreneur, my Dad, who taught me everything I know about success and even failure. He found something he was very passionate about and grew it to a multi-million dollar company, which he eventually sold to a publicly traded company in 2018. My whole childhood was centered around him growing and expanding his business, which ended up being the greatest learning experience I could’ve ever asked for. In 2020, I graduated from Florida State University, specifically the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship, with a bachelor’s degree in Commercial Entrepreneurship. Watching my Dad pursue his passion pushed me to move to a new city out of my comfort zone and find something I was equally as passionate about – which has led me to my newest partnership with JETSET Pilates. I’m very confident about the success of this business in Fort Lauderdale and I’m sure its going to thrive here.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think the JETSET Pilates brand truly speaks for itself. From the challenging workout with its custom reformers, to the instructors, to the community that it has built throughout Miami – it really is the total package. I’m proud to be bringing a workout that I’ve personally fallen in love with to a community that I believe is going to appreciate it as much as I do. I’m looking forward to keeping the integrity of the brand as a franchise owner while putting my own Fort Lauderdale flare on it.
I’ve been very eager to start something of my own outside of my family business, which has brought a lot of trial and error into my work ventures as a young entrepreneur. Nothing good comes easily. I know it’s cliché to say “do what you love”, but I’ve seen that combining work with passion truly does yield the best results. I moved down to South Florida almost two years ago and struggled to find a workout that I loved. I took one JETSET class and immediately reached out about franchising. I saw how special the workout, people, and environment were, and knew I wanted to be apart of it in some way – which led me here today!
Flagler Village is such an up-and-coming area in our community filled with young entrepreneurs who are hungry to succeed. Since moving down here, I’ve established a strong support system of people who are eager to help each other grow their businesses. I know that this small community will all come together to add JETSET to the list of success stories here in Flagler Village.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is such a difficult question because I’ve fallen in love with so many different aspects of Fort Lauderdale. My go-to restaurants here are Takato, YOLO, and Coconuts. Some of my favorite nightlife spots are The Wharf, American Social, 27 Bar, or the outside bar at SALT7. I love riding bikes to Elbo room on the beach, walking down Las Olas, frequenting the dog park along the Riverwalk, taking a boat out to the sandbar, or laying out by the pool. Pretty much anything outside with friends will always be a vibe in South Florida.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say my biggest support system is my family. Working with family definitely comes with many challenges especially when we’re all equally stubborn, but it’s taught me so much about who I am as a person and what my strengths are. It’s also really taught me, that you can’t be great at everything, but you can surround yourself with people that are very knowledgable at what they do and learn from them. I’m proud to show my family what I’ve been working on and hope they love it as much as I do!
Also worth mentioning and deserves credit in the opening of this studio is Anna Gist-we met in college at FSU and we’ve been inseparable ever since. She’s been present every step of the way and has been a vital asset to me while opening up the first JETSET pilates franchise location. From our experience working together, we know how to balance each other out and how to play to each others strengths and weaknesses, couldn’t have done it without her.
