We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Handelman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was truly a very natural decision. Because of my family connections in the industry, I was able to explore my own business without taking any financial risk. My only investment was my time, and as a young 20-something individual working in the corporate world, I saw the merit in spending a couple hours a day exploring this business and investigating the potential. I was able to enter the industry very gradually, very safely, and very thoughtfully. Once I formally started my own business and I had left my corporate job, I had already built a clientele, experience, and my own connections to be able to succeed.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is based on three pillars: trust, exceptional service, and a pricing/quality guarantee. These three pillars set us apart and I believe drive our continued success in the industry.
The trust pillar is most important. When dealing in gold and diamonds, the trust is the first and most important factor. People often question “am I getting what I am paying for,” “is the quality really what s/he says it is,” “how do I know this is real” etc. Establishing trust is so crucial and we do this by being extremely transparent with our clients and very educational in our product, its make and finish.
Our service pillar is what makes us “us.” We take pride in offering exceptional service, regardless of what the client is asking for. Whether someone is shopping for a $200 pair of gold earrings, or a $10,000 engagement ring, they will receive excellent service. Fine jewellery purchases are often for milestone occasions and we appreciate that. Many of our clients have grown with us, and we truly value each one.
Finally, our pricing and quality guarantee is based on offering the best product at the best possible price. We believe in being fair and reasonable across the board. It is how our clients build trust in us – because we are fair. We put ourselves in your shoes and deliver a product and experience that we’d be happy to receive.
Every person and business has experienced challenges. It is hard to recount every single one but there have definitely been mistakes in a variety of categories – we’re human after all. I am proud to say that we don’t make the same mistake twice. Every time there’s been a mistake or oversight, we’ve instituted a process to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. I am definitely proud of our growth and maturity as a business.
Our brand is truly about delivering modern fine jewellery with a classic twist. That is our mantra. Our pieces are forever classic, yet on trend, feminine and wearable. We love that so many of our clients come back to us and stay with us for such a long time.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband supported me a lot in starting, as a side hustle, and really encouraged me to take the ultimate risk of making Jessica Jewellery my full time job. Given his background in finance and business (same as mine), we were able to really bounce ideas off of each other. He supported me immensely, and gave me courage to quit my own finance job. He continues to support my business as I juggle our young children and is a fantastic strategic partner when it comes to ideas of growth.
