We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
The fact that I am given the chance to follow the professional path that I have always felt was destined for me is the source of my happiness. My goal in life is to capture the actual grandeur that exists within the human spirit through the art of photography. The expressions on the faces of my clients once they have received their images are priceless. It fills me with complete joy when I can make someone else happy. My fascination with photography began when I was a little child, and it developed further as I watched my father, who was also a photographer. Even at the young age of eight, I was interested, and I would accompany my father to every event that he would cover, whether it was a wedding or a graduation. Gradually, I became my father’s right hand because of my interest in what he did. At that time, I would be the one to get the images printed for my dad but, in late afternoons, at home, you would find young Dominique behind my father’s camera practicing with inanimate objects until my dad trusted me enough that his clients became my clients. People were always surprised when they saw me at events with my dad at such a young age taking pictures but my work spoke for itself.
“In real life, getting where you want to go will almost never be an easy or quick task. To be successful, you must maintain mental, physical, and spiritual wellness, in my opinion. It is not important to focus on material things; rather, you should keep your attention on your goals, and everything else will work out. I am an honest person, and God has provided me with a skill that enables me to put a smile on other people’s faces through the art of photography. I live for the opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime..” – Dominique Davis
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, I am a self-taught Jamaican (photo/video)grapher. Raised in a Christian household. My love for the art of photography was instilled in me by my father, Dave Davis. At the age of 17, I co-founded Limited Edition Family Photography. A group of six of us called ourselves ‘The Promoters’. We covered mostly high school parties and school-related events. As destiny intended, there will always come a time for the lone wolf to leave the pack. And, in 2015, Domz Photography — later known as Domz Media came into being. Domz Media captures images showcasing a collection of beauty from portrait, fashion, photojournalism, travel, sports photography, and documentaries. In Jamaica, I established myself as the go-to photographer for wealthy socialites as seen in photoshoots with the likes of Krystal Tomlinson, Asafa Powell, Emprezz Golding, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Kamila McDonald, and Beenie Man.In 2019, I got the chance to shoot American comedian, television host, producer, radio personality, actor, and author Steve Harvey’s arrival in Montego Bay for the Sagicor Motivational Seminar (SMS). Some of my most prominent works are done alongside my close friend, my brother Oshane “Shane Creative” Junior of Wikid Media Ja. I have played the role of director, editor, and behind-the-scenes photographer for music videos for numerous Reggae and Dancehall musicians such as Jahshii, Jah Vinci, Masicka, Buju Banton, Marcy Chin, Govana, Squash, Shaneil Muir, D’yani and Ding Dong — the list goes on. However, with my culturally conscious eye, my true passion is capturing the reclamation of Black Femininity. Above all, I recognize that he who wields the camera has the power to change a narrative, especially when it comes to women of color. Don’t get me wrong, I like people but, when I get to photograph a black woman in her essence — there’s always a feeling of empowerment, and that image of power matters. Furthermore, I have also worked with reputable organizations such as Phase 3 Productions, Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Jamaica as well as Reggae Sumfest.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thanks to my parents, close friends, and extended family for always believing in me and my company, Domz Media.
