We had the good fortune of connecting with Mavis Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mavis, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

Mavology was birthed during the Covid 2020 pandemic. While working full time as an essential worker in a hospital my mental and emotion health began to decline. Being in a leadership role I had to manage myself and teams’ wellbeing during an uncertain world crisis. Over a period of 6 months, I completely lost myself and fell into a depression. I was living in Boston with no immediate family and had to isolate from friends due to my work situation.

I began to focus on rebranding my previous business and diving deep into my personal skin care routine. I would take an extra 30 minutes in the morning and night to nourish and nurture my body. I would listen to music and spend the time honoring myself. Using body butters, oils, serums, and breathing. I did this consistently for 6 months before it became mindless, natural, and routine. I began to come alive again. It was at this very moment I realized the benefits of being intentional, and how it fostered positive results in my life. Shortly after I began Therapy and working with a Personal Trainer. All these very specific and thoughtful steps yielded the same results of holistic self-improvement, body positivity, self-love.

All the while, I was focusing my efforts and energy working with my creative team to give Mavology a new look, feel, and overall brand mission.

What drives Mavology’s success is exactly what our tagline states, “Skincare made with intention”. All our products are carefully formulated and crafted, using the finest ingredients, and made to bring awareness back to self by nurturing the body.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My formal career and background is in Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts. The skills I attained during my 15 plus years in the industry have taught me the importance of customer service satisfaction. Creating and developing formulas using only premium ingredients. And focusing on serving the clients highest needs are paramount. As a luxury skincare and wellness brand, Mavology strives to provide total body wellness from the outside in.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I shoutout all my entrepreneurial friends. I’ve watched them grow, fail, succeed, and take risks. Without their transparency, purpose, and ability to share, I would not have the confidence to take leaps at the rate I have. Seeing people, in real time, follow their dreams inspire me.
