We had the good fortune of connecting with Dee Goodson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dee, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I would say in the industry that I’m in, almost 80% (if not more) of this business is taking risks. There’s a saying that goes “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”, that applies perfectly to what I do. There’s so many “what if’s” in this like of work that it can be overwhelming sometimes, but if you let it consume you then you’ll never see how far you can really go. You will fail at times but you have to have enough passion and persistence to keep going and taking the good, the bad, all of it, and embrace it all because it’s going to make you stronger in the end.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would say what make singles me out the most as a recording artist would be my lyrics and the guitar. Nowadays you don’t really see young black artist play guitar and piano unfortunately because of the high demand for hip hop, so with that being said, my sound comes across as extremely diverse to not only my (the black) community but always any other race or ethnicity, which I love because music is a universal language! It has no color of any kind. So I used that to my advantage and uploaded video after video of me singing covers on guitar and piano as well as releasing music that I wrote myself year after year. Definitely wasn’t easy but the most enjoyable ride ever because this is what I live for. I basically ended up learning that we all have our niche as artists. We just have to find exactly what it is and expand on that! Because that’s what makes us unique.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So the very first place we gotta stop by is Los Angeles! I’m a Bama boy, we don’t see the city often so I need the vibes! There’s a few studios that I go to when I’m there as well, then after that take a flight straight to Fort Myers for some amazing Jamaican food at ‘Spice’ then straight to Tampa for a studio session at Suite Sixteen Studios with my engineer Vick. Then after that, heading to New York to perform at Madison Square Garden for the first time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t dedicate my shoutout to my mother. She’s the reason why I’m even here today and get to do what I love doing. Her sacrifice and unconditional love gave me what I needed to navigate through this crazy thing called life! Love you mom!
