We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarita Nauth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarita, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite affirmation is “Don’t set yourself on fire to keep others warm.” Every time I encounter a roadblock, an issue, or a situation where I feel like I question my value/self-worth, or I am made to feel uneasy, I ask myself– is this benefitting me or them? I’ve learned not to treat everything as an emergency to the point where my mental health and bandwidth are stretched thin and I no longer have a relationship with myself and my thoughts. This allows me to step back, assess the project or task at hand and prioritize myself, find a solution, and allow myself to process what was being asked of me and its importance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve had a long and fruitful career at VH1, my first corporate job out of college, and one of which I am proud of because it has given me so many opportunities for growth and projects that I once dreamed of now turned into reality. Along this path, I had the opportunity to learn more about myself, creativity, expansion, and finding my footing now as a Producer. What I’ve learned along the way has helped me to get to where I am and lessons I will carry on into my future endeavors:
Learn to advocate and speak up: you are your best representer so if there is a project you see aligns best for you– ask to work on it OR create it. You will never know what it can unfold into especially if you assume you will hear a ‘no’ before a ‘yes.’
Prioritize your mental health: working in television and media is heavy for Social Media Managers; make sure you communicate to your team when to step back and reset.
Not every challenge will break you: this is something I learned recently when it comes to dealing with new opportunities. It’s the things we think will hold us back that actually propel us forward, like an arrow. Keep an open mind when dealing with new team members, projects, etc. you might be surprised at the outcome.
Lastly, your identity to yourself is what sets you apart, use it to your advantage. When you know yourself, you can speak from a place of authenticity. Knowing more about my Caribbean heritage allowed me to create content that is tailored to the audience I know wanted more representation across media and entertainment.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a New York girl, I honestly love showing my friends the places that most people don’t venture out to when visiting the city– from the Upper East Side, to hidden museums in Manhattan to even taking a trip out to Long Island, where I live, and views some gardens and venture to the Hamptons!
When it comes to going down South to the 305, I love Miami beaches but I absolutely love the food and boozy brunches at Instagram-approved spots like ‘Bacon B*tch’ and more!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been SO many amazing mentors and guides that I have been blessed to work with over the last decade. If I had to name one person, it would be my mentor, and now dear friend, Andrew Sotomayor. Since High School, where I studied Fashion Design, Andrew mentored me and gave me my first real job in the industry working at large-scale events from NYFW to Broadway, and putting my name in rooms I had only dreamed of being. As a Celebrity Makeup Artist, Andrew has always pioneered a robust career for me and invested in life skills that have allowed me to be well-rounded, while also always growing and elevating. I wish everyone was as lucky as I was to have someone like him to be not only a champion but a challenger, to my path of success. He has taught me lessons that I still apply to this day and pass down to my own mentees. That space of growth was fostered during a time when he saw in me what I now know I am, and for that, I am forever grateful.
