We had the good fortune of connecting with Naomi Pittman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Naomi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The process of starting a business usually requires many steps. However, in my case the process of starting a business actually came naturally through the process of experimenting with offering various services to family and friends years ago (early 2010s) before my first llc. One of the first services I offered was resume writing. This business showed me how to convert a skill into currency. Another service I offered years ago was selling hype-beast sneakers on eBay. This service showed me how to leverage online presence and marketing, especially with pictures of shoes to make sales. When officially staring my company ELEKproTEK my thought process was to start with a solid foundation. The services I offered previously were simple and I didn’t create an official company structure or foundation. So with ELEKproTEK I started with the basics such as company name, services, business plan, company phone number, llc, and insurance etc. Starting a business with a solid structure is the best way to start.

What should our readers know about your business?
ELEKproTEK provides electrical, technical, and automation services to a variety of industries and municipalities. This company is a next generation of technically trained and experienced professionals. Bridging the gap between electricity, technology and automation. With over 10 years of providing next level technical support. ELEKproTEK is committed to accessing the customer’s needs and providing the most, professional, comprehensive, and quality services, at home, in the field and abroad. We specialize in electrical repair services and offer other maintenance repair services.

For the last 10 years I have been building my technical, electrical, mechanical, programming, and marketing skills. I have gained these skills through the combination of on the job work in various fields from IT, electrical, systems integration and entrepreneurship; and in different roles from an intern, database admin, apprentice, electrician, and application engineer. In addition to these roles I’ve also gained knowledge via continuing education, certificate programs, internships, apprenticeships, and trade-shows.

As a DBA I worked with complex data and databases for an Oil and Gas Service Company. This role exposed me to the importance of real time data and data analytics which is crucial in todays data driven society. In addition to data I discovered the topic of cybersecurity.

A few years later after wanting to get away from the desk, I was given the opportunity to start a 4 year electrical apprenticeship program. It was during this program that the thought of ELEKproTEK came. After completing the 4-year apprenticeship I went on to expand my electrical skills by learning electrical controls, and integrating these controls with plc programming, hmi, and SCADA.

In the process of developing over the years from corporate America, to blue collar America and in many rooms I was the only female or person of color. Over the years I had to learn what it took to stand out in any room no matter how uncomfortable I may have felt. These experiences pushed me to pursue the vision of ELEKproTEK.

ELEKproTEK stands for “Elect the Professional Technicians.” The vision is to train the next generation of technicians and educate them with the technical, electrical, and automation skills necessary to power the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One thing you must know is that I grew up in a city called Atlanta, GA and I’m what they call a “Grady Baby”. As a Grady Baby it’s only right that I suggest you grab lunch at J.R Crickets downtown Atl location and order the 10 piece hot wings. Make sure they are all-flats, extra-wet, with lemon Pepper sprinkles and a peach drink. That’s ATL’s favorite meal and that’s coming from a true ATLien. After lunch or with lunch head for a nice walk at Piedmont park, (mine and ATL’s favorite park). Next you could check out some light shopping at nearby Atlantic Station. This spot is loaded with amazing stores and restaurants.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
An organization that I would love to shout-out is the IEC (Independent Electrical Contractors of Atlanta). This 4-year electrical apprenticeship program opened the door for multiple opportunities in my life. Thanks to this program I gained experience in residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems as well as controls, plc, hmi, and SCADA systems. In addition to these skills I gained a journeyman electrical card that is recognized in 50 states. The skilled trades are an undervalued opportunity for this generation and the IEC is an organization that provides the training necessary to become a certified electrician. Shoutout IEC Atlanta & GA.
