Meet Dmitry Byk, MD | Physician, Entrepreneur, Podcast Host, and Professional Speaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dmitry Byk, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dmitry, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Never give up and find your niche. Business success is really about overcoming failures along the way. There are going to be at least a few, possibly more, but if you give up you’ll be done and won’t succeed. Perseverance is a virtue that’s important to long term goal achievement. Career fulfillment is finding the place that you’re the most comfortable with yourself and what you know you’re able to endure. The best thing is to know yourself. Once you do that you’ll know the best place you fit in your career path.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My day job is as a treating adult, geriatric, and forensic Psychiatrist in South Florida taking care of patients. However, I started The Psych Effect Podcast two years ago alone with the idea that I would interview guests on each show. Being the host, producer, guest booker, editor, marketer, and social media director of a podcast became just too much and the show ended after six episodes. It was fun, but incredibly difficult to do alone. What I noticed over the last few years was the topic of mental health in sports has become more open for discussion than it has ever been and although there are many psychological podcasts about sports, there aren’t any psychiatric voices. I decided it to give the podcast another chance, but needed a partner. Stephane was a perfect choice as both of us are certifying in sports psychiatry and can give a more medical perspective to podcasting than there is available right now. Adding Suzanne is a perfect compliment to us because she adds a female perspective that is necessary in today’s society especially as women’s sports is growing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my friends come down to the Ft. Lauderdale/Broward County area the first place they usually want to go is the beach because why else would you come down to South Florida other than to check out our awesome beaches? We would hit Ft. Lauderdale beach during the day and have lunch at S3 on N. Ft Lauderdale Beach Blvd. I would strongly recommend the S3 Burger. For the evening we would hit Las Olas and go to Lobster Bar for dinner, then bar hopping. If they want to shop, I would take them to Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise or Aventura Mall or if they’re into museums the Frost Museum in downtown Miami is amazing. There are shows at the Jackie Gleason Theater or the Broward Center For The Performing Arts.
To get a real “Florida experience” they need to go on an airboat tour in the everglades of course and if they’re into sports then I would definitely take them to see the Florida Panthers or the Miami Heat in the winter months or the Miami Marlins in the summer months.
There’s just too much to do in this area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In any story there are always people along the way that help bring you to where you are today. As a doctor there are medical school professors, chief residents, attendings, but when it comes to The Psych Effect Podcast it comes to down to three people. My wife Maria who continued to encourage me to pursue this endeavor when the initial iteration didn’t pan out and my two co-hosts, Stephane DeGraff, MD and Suzanne Mignone, PsyD. They are incredibly knowledgeable in their field which makes them perfect for this show, also really funny, love sports, and just really good people.
