We had the good fortune of connecting with Adrian Lores de la Pena and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adrian, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I like to think I had a thought process behind opening Lores & Associates but to be honest there was none. With everything going on with COVID I saw the opportunity of a life time. I decided to quit my job as a State and Local Tax Specialist and that’s how Lores & Associates, Corp. I mean there were some marketing and branding thoughts but other than that nothing crazy. I was unhappy at my previous job. I felt that there were a lot of unfulfilled promises and to be quiet honest I was not enjoying my time there like I was at first. But in creating Lores & Associates, Corp I wanted to combined my analytical skills acquired from my Juris Doctors degree, and my tax knowledge from my Masters Law of Taxation. I also had some experience as a tax preparer and all those three combined make me think that I could be a tax consultant for individuals and business alike.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I graduated from the world-renown University of Florida, Levin College of Law and third best program Graduate Tax Program where I obtained a Master of Law in Taxation (LL.M) in May 2019. Prior to that I attended law school at St. Thomas University School of Law, in Miami Gardens, Florida. As law school student, I had a passion for helping other which led me to volunteer at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program of the Internal Revenue Service as an Advanced Certified Tax Preparer and Assistant Site Coordinator. As a student clinician at Saint Thomas University School of Law, Tax Clinic, I was exposed to various areas of taxation law, including tax controversy and worked side by side with the tax director, and program coordinator to resolve federal tax issues including negotiating and reducing tax liabilities. All of these fomented my interest and passion for taxation. My firm, Lores & Associates specializes in Offer in Compromise and Correspondence Examinations as well as Installment Agreement. We also represent clients before the IRS.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
While I have not been there in a long time I think that Ball and Chain is a must if you want to dance the night away. But if you are in a mood for a more quiet place, the Il Gabiano is a nice option, and Faena on the beach. Miami is a very lively place and there’s always something to do for everyone.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Throughout the years I have had the honor and privilege of working with people of all walks of life and I can say that I learned a little bit from each and one of them. But without a doubt there is a team in the Miami Area to whom I have to thank them for giving a chance when no one else would, PereGonza Law Group. Juan and Rob were my mentors and friends. I can say that one of the first to know of my business idea was them. Juan and Rob showed me that if you do things rights and you set your mind to iy you can accomplish it. I saw the entrepreneurial since day one while I was a law clerk during my second year of law school. I also would like to thank my family that albeit far, they have always been there for me to cheer me up. I could not asked for a better family. Lastly, I would not be where I am today if it wasnt for the mentorship of Silvia Velazquez, Professor Mark Wolff form St. Thomas University and Professor Dennis Calfee from University of Florida, Graduate Tax Program.
