We had the good fortune of connecting with Elle Fields and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elle, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my gym is a strong sense of community. The brand HEW has always been about trying to include anyone and everyone, meaning people of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels.

For example, I started working out at this gym when I was nine years old and now I have had the privilege to coach people up to seventy years old. When I say anyone and everyone can do this I mean it.

For a lot of people, coming to the gym everyday is like coming to hang out with family. Consistently seeing the same people everyday really brings us all together, we’re able to celebrate our wins together and support each other through losses.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is a functional fitness gym that offers coaching to people of all levels of fitness and all ages.

HEW is not CrossFit but it is very similar in terms of the style of our workouts, however we are very different in the aspect of community. HEW in comparison to your regular CrossFit gym is much more welcoming and not as intimidating. We value community so much and I believe that the right group of people is what makes a gym feel like home, it’s what drives people to keep coming back.

I got where I am today business-wise because of my mom and also the people I have around me. I really could not ask for a better group of people to be so supportive. It definitely has not been easy but I don’t think I have hit the worst part yet… lol (we will have to revisit that after the grand opening). The worst part is the exhaustion, having to be up every morning at 3:45am to set up the workout outside and tear it down at the end of day (which is temporary thankfully). It is very strenuous on your body, while I am also still trying to exercise when I can.

A big lesson I have learned so far is to manage my time wisely, which I used to struggle with. I would leave things to be done til the last minute and then just give myself anxiety about the fact that they aren’t done. Now in order to get through my day I have to plan it out strategically and get things done right when they need to be done.
Also another lesson I have learned along the way is to try to be kind to people. I have had a few clients here and there who have not always been in the best moods and in this industry you have to learn to be okay with that and be patient with them. People go through things that we don’t know about and I’ve had to learn to be sensitive to that.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would probably take them to my gym for a workout of course lol, and then we would definitely go to Chipotle after or Just Salad.

Then maybe go to the beach or shopping.

Then go home and order CR Chicks.

I am boring and I like to eat lol.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well firstly that would be my mom Erin Crawford who says she does not want to be included in these things but she deserves it because I would not be where I am today without her.

Secondly, Blake and Talia the owners of HEW West Palm Beach. I have trained under them the past six months and I genuinely would not have ever wanted to train under a different gym. They were also the owners of the HEW I started at when I was nine years old in Wellington. They are such great people and have coached me since I was a little girl. I would like to mirror my gym to theirs and run it the same way or as close as I can possibly get, I genuinely love it there and anyone who is in the West Palm area should absolutely give them a try at least once, I think you’ll be guaranteed to love it.

Lastly, my olympic weightlifting coach Neil Kanterman who owns Crossfit Hardcore Parkland. He was such a great coach throughout my years doing Olympic lifting, extremely supportive and a great person overall. He is the reason why I did so well in weightlifting, I couldn’t have asked for a better coach.
