Oh, risk and I are longtime friends. They’ve fueled my entrepreneurial journey, starting when I moved to Florence as a 19-year-old. Throughout my earlier years in life, I was expected to live life conventionally, avoid making too many waves, live life with few expectations of myself or of others but always consider others needs before my own.. I did the academic things, bachelor degree and later in Masters but never quite knew exactly why or what my intention was for the future, other than playing a one up a ship game with myself and in relation to others in the same, school, marry,,have kids….None of my earliest memories or experiences indicated any artistic pursuits or aptitude as I excelled in sports and outdoorsy activities while my mom was a professional singer, my sister a dancer and me, I was considered the smart, athletic child. I don’t recall anyone ever suggesting that I pursue any form of art or creative classes. My very first memory of art and pretty much the only one I reacll very fondly was entering nursery school at 4 and being given a smock, an easel and a paintbrush, choices of vibrant primary colors waiting for me to dip in and do as I wished. I loved it! That was it for another 45+ years thereafter! Mom always brought home loads of sketching paper, crayons and colored pencils on her daily outings but aside from that and a crafting book that I enjoyed, that was my art exposure. Risk entered my life quite suddenly, as I chose single motherhood, full time work as a teacher and evening s working in a Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy., kept me fully immersed in edging my way into a new way of life, one that was never planned nor easy in any way shape or form. Little did I realize that It was the first time I began creating depth and layering my world in quite scary yet illuminating ways. These new layers would provide the initial breadcrumbs leading to my life in the world of creativity. Read more>>

I think anyone who always played it safe in life never got to see all that they’re truly capable of because they never took risks to see if they can accomplish a goal, a dream, or overcome a given task. Taking risks in my life has not only made me a wiser woman, but has gotten me closer to my goals whether it be in my career, business or personal life. The thing about “risks” is even if you don’t accomplish something, you know you’ve tried something outside your comfort zone and now have a valuable lesson to take with you on the next journey. You know that saying, With no risk comes no reward. That’s definitely true, when opening a business. There is a lot of sacrifice, hard work, determination and dedication. In 2017 when I decided to open The Cake lovers storefront it was one of the biggest risks I have ever taken in my life. With the support of my husband, family and friends. We used everything we had. We worked diligently to open as quickly as possible. working every day and most nights, to open in just a few months. We did everything our selves. This definitely challenged me in so many ways. Taking on this risk, the over head and rolling the dice with no employees. There was a lot of sacrifice. I had two young boys at the time, and not being present at home was difficult. However without this risk I wouldn’t be where I am today. Read more>>
