We had the good fortune of connecting with Aria Elsezy-Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aria, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
This may surprise some but coaching is actually not about providing answers or solutions to clients’ problems. Instead, it’s about asking powerful questions that guide clients to discover the answers within themselves. My clients are all empowered to dig deep, ponder the hard questions, and consider what they may have been avoiding all along to get the breakthrough they have been looking for. As I walk along side of them, we set strategy to overcome any obstacle that is in front of them. At Porchlight Coaching, we believe that every person is the expert of their own life journey, and our role is to facilitate their self-discovery process by helping them to better understand themselves, their strengths, their values, and their faith.
We also recognize that God moves uniquely in each person’s life and no two people’s stories are the same. We choose not to use cookie cutter questions and instead are deeply invested in understanding our client’s unique situation and helping them find the light or clarity in the midst of darkness and confusion. By asking thought-provoking questions, we create a supportive environment to help clients navigate life’s challenges with clarity, confidence, and courage. This collaborative process empowers clients to uncover their own solutions, make informed decisions, and ultimately, live more purposeful and fulfilling lives.
What should our readers know about your business?
Growing up I was always naturally inquisitive and deeply reflective. Even at young age, I was acutely aware of the value of time, the importance of balance, and the power of vison to achieve goals.
I saw family members working jobs that were stressful, unfulfilling, and led to burn out and even health issues. This planted the seed for me to begin on the journey toward meaningful and fulfilling work that allowed me to use my strengths, my gifts, and my passions. I didn’t just want to exist but to excel!
Except life happened – I graduated and needed a job to start paying back student loans. Before I knew it I was working 60+ hour weeks and looking burnout dead in the eye. However, I was convinced that meaningful work and great pay were not mutually exclusive. I was determined to find another way – and I did! I pivoted into a career in learning and development where I found the sweet spot between my passion and my purpose again but as I looked around at my peers I realized I was the only one.
Most conversations about work with friends were filled with discouragement, boredom, stress and fear to make a change. They felt stuck, imprisoned by the expectations of others, lack of clarity, and fear of the unknown.
As 2020 turned our lives upside down it also created an opportunity to slow down and seek clarity in our lives and careers. Looking over my life, I realized that having a career that fit wasn’t only possible for me but for everyone and what I had learned along the way could help so many others.
I harnessed my professional experience in leadership development, became certified as a coach, and founded Porchlight Coaching & Development to help others find more meaning, fulfillment, and clarity in their career so they can pivot towards purpose! I am convinced that now is the time. A fresh start and chance to think about what you really want, where your passions lie, and where your purpose can take root. It is my honor and a privilege to support my clients every step of the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a Philly girl at heart but have been in the DMV (D.C./MD/VA) area for almost a decade and have fallen in love with it! I joined corporate america here, met my husband here, and adopted my fur baby Miles here – it’s home! One of the most unique things about the area is that in a weekend you can be in three different states with three completely different vibes. I love a good museum so I would kick the trip off in the heart of Washington, D.C. at the National Mall visiting the many museums and in April the cherry blossom festival. Afterwards, we can check out the food trucks or head to Hamilton (one of my favorite restaurants in the city)! I also highly recommend Blues Alley for some live jazz music or The Diner for some late night food. In the summer time, checkout Jazz In The Garden or head to the Navy Yard area which is one of my favorite places to hang out with lots of great restaurants, picnic spots, and areas to take in the beauty of the waterfront. In the evening, it gets no better than visiting the monuments at night, the city glows and it’s so peaceful!
Venturing over to Northern Virginia, Great Falls Park is one of my favorite places with it’s nature trails and waterfalls (yes, waterfalls!) it’s one of the most beautiful places for a walk or bike ride. For food, I love Pho 75 and Bar Bao in Arlington, Va for some delicious food after visiting the falls.
In Maryland, visiting the inner harbor and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum is a great way to take in the city. In the evening, I would head to G & M for the best crab cakes in the area or to Eat.Drink.Relax (EDR) for the most delicious lamb chops! For dessert, check out Buns & Roses for their famous “chimney cakes”. Lastly for a relaxing spa experience, art exhibit, or jazz show check out Wellspring Manor in Upper Malboro, Maryland – this B&B is truly a home away from home and definitely a hidden gem in the area!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am so thankful to my husband, my friends, and family for all of their support and encouragement. I’m also thankful to God for giving me the vision for PorchLight Coaching and helping me to see the need to help lead others from the dark into the light. Life and career transitions are not always easy and while I have had my fair share I am honored and grateful for each and every one of my clients that has trusted me with their journey and to the leaders who invest in their team’s development with coaching, consulting, and professional development services. It makes a difference – and there’s nothing more rewarding than being apart of someone’s transformational journey!
