We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Dowd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
In 2009, I launched Luxe Social Media ® while I working as a marketing director for my family’s boutique luxury hotel in Turks and Caicos. I was also concurrently a hotel inspector for a Conde Nast publication and visited the most luxurious hotels in the Caribbean. Social media was just beginning to become popular, and one day, I set up my parent’s hotel as a Facebook Friend and started posting beautiful images of the beach and resort. A friend saw it and wanted to book an anniversary stay. The light bulb went off! There was traditional marketing and print PR, but no one was doing this new thing called “social media marketing.” I approached a few of my favorite hoteliers and pitched them the idea that I would manage their social media behind the scenes (Facebook and Twitter at the time), and in a short amount of time, I was working with the best luxury hotels and private islands in the world. I was among the first people to start an agency for luxury travel solely based on social media. In the past 15 years, I’ve worked with hotels in over 23 countries and five continents.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Luxe Social Media ® is a social media marketing agency for luxury hotels and brands. I’ve been fortunate to have a dream list of clients and work with the most inspiring people in my industry. We’ve worked with clients in 23 countries and five continents, anywhere from luxury hotels to private islands. I’ve had every opportunity to grow my clientele, but I choose to keep it small and exclusive. In addition to my social media agency, I am a trusted luxury travel influencer known as “Luxe Tiffany” and have been recognized as one of the most influential people in luxury travel. I’m very proud of this as I have built my reputation as a luxury travel insider through consistency and authenticity. In a world saturated with “influencers” – I rather prefer to say I’m “influential” in what I say and do.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think Boston is one of the greatest cities in the world. It’s the most European of the cities in the United States. I would recommend dinner at Contessa at The Newbury Boston (don’t miss the Spicy Lobster Capellini), drinks at the uber-chic private club The ‘Quin, a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (also where I met my husband 26 years ago), a stay at XV Beacon in charming Beacon Hill, dinner in the North End, the Italian area of Boston followed by chocolate chip dipped cannoli at Modern Pastry. In the summer, we’d go to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout-out to Laura Davidson, the owner of Laura Davidson Public Relations in New York. She handled the PR of my very first client, and from the very beginning, Laura was supportive of the launch of my business, and saw it as a complement to what she was doing. It’s the perfect example of women empowering women. I have great admiration for Laura and her work in the luxury travel industry.
