We had the good fortune of connecting with Renaldo Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Renaldo, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
End of my career, I see myself as a writer, producer creating movies and shows that are consumed in VR and performing shows around the world in person and VR
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a comedian. What sets me apart is I’m not afraid to be controversial but I make sure my jokes are always funny. I started off in the music industry as a rapper. I competed in Battle rap competitions and won The Black College Spring Break Rap Battle on BET Rap CIty in school. Then one of my friends decided to pitch a tv comedy show and battle rap is essentially making fun of the competition so he asked me to write on his show. So that started my career into true comedy writing. Show was not picked up so I decided to start doing Standup Comedy to get my foot into the writing industry. It has not been easy. The only way to overcome challenges is to be patient. I’ve had many years of unpaid shows and comedy contests. I’ve learned to be patient and that no matter how funny you are, you may not be what they’re looking for in the industry as far as shows, movies, or even comedy clubs. I want the world to know I’m fearless comedy and I write jokes designed to land. I’m not just saying jokes I think are funny, I want the crowd to enjoy themselves and my comedy is relatable even if it’s controversial. .
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to a Sports game or to a concert. LA is a Sports town and there is always a concert happening either at the Bowl or The Forum. Shop along Melrose. And for food we have to hit up food trucks. Hang out at the Beach because it’s Cali how do you not go to the Beach. Late night we have to hit a comedy club because I’m probably working.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Darin WIlcox, Ambyr Leidig and my Mom. These people are the reason I’m able to perform and have helped my career tremendously.
