We had the good fortune of connecting with Nadezhda Iushkina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nadezhda, what is the most important factor behind your success?
For my opinion the most important factor is to keep moving, and persevere. Of course, in my field of research in gemology and geology in general there are a lot of nuances and areas of research and it is easy to lose focus or stop developing. But it is important to keep moving and achieve even small results. I regularly write scientific articles and continue to research the development of gemology, study new devices for identifying stones and new laboratory developments. Success is often the result of consistent effort, dedication, and perseverance. Those who are willing to put in the work and persist in the face of challenges are more likely to achieve their goals. One more important thing is setting clear, specific, achievable, and relevant goals provides clarity and direction, helping individuals focus their efforts and track their progress. Success also requires ongoing learning and development. Embracing opportunities for growth, seeking new knowledge and skills, and being open to feedback and improvement are essential for staying competitive and adapting to change. Effective communication and collaboration in science is very important too. Building a strong science community, networking, with international specialists creating for gemmology more opportunities for mutual growth. Ultimately, success is a multifaceted concept influenced by various personal qualities, behaviors, and external factors. By cultivating these attributes and aligning actions with goals and values, individuals can increase their chances of achieving success in their endeavors.

My work involves the study and evaluation of gemstones, both natural and lab-grown. What distinguishes me from other specialists is a high level of professionalism, supported by completed higher education with a master’s degree, and not just completed gemological courses. I know everything about stones, from the process of their formation and the ways in which inclusions are captured, to their chemical composition and syngony. I know everything about the physical and chemical properties of minerals; diamonds are of greatest interest to me, since they still have a lot of untapped potential for use. I have been conducting my professional activities since 2012, that is, I already have more than 12 years of experience and constant examination of precious stones. In the course of my development as a professional, I have come a long way, which included geological camps, field engineering search works, as well as stone cutting and the study of jewelry art. I really love my specialty and area of research. I also filed a patent application, which was approved by the US Patent Office. Now we are planning to develop our own startup, which will take diamond technology to a new level.

The research on diamonds from the Siberian platform in Russia, which I conducted for the Russian Academy of Sciences, formed the basis of one of my books that I wrote. In my books, I introduce readers to the world of diamonds and reveal a lot of useful and unique information.

For more than 10 years I have been running a private gemological practice and revealing the secrets of ancient antique jewelry and traditional precious stones.

The most interesting aspect of my work, I believe, is the search for differences between natural and synthetic gemstones such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, and rubies. Moreover, there’s now a skillful imitation of the fashionable gemstone known as Paraiba tourmaline. Solving this task, identifying the features characteristic of natural or synthetic origin of gemstones, resembles a real puzzle, and a gemologist must apply all their knowledge to determine and identify each specific sample. Determining mineral or other inclusions in a precious stone can tell a lot to a specialist and assist in identification. The color of the stone can also be a good clue. It’s a very captivating process, and since I specialize in synthetic diamond cultivation, I handle this task faster and more efficiently than others. Additionally, advancements in the startup field help to think globally and break out of routine.

From my childhood, I’ve been fascinated by and collected stones. I was drawn to the fact that they hold a multimillion-year history within them and that they will continue to exist for millions of years to come.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami is a vibrant city with plenty to offer. I love to spend time on the beach, and Miami Beach is an iconic beach and famous for its white sand, clear blue water, and lively atmosphere. Spend the day sunbathing, swimming, or strolling along Ocean Drive to soak up the Miami vibe. I also like the Wynwood Walls area, an outdoor street art gallery featuring vibrant murals by renowned artists from around the world. It’s a must-visit for art lovers and photographers. If you miss Europe you can step back in time with a visit to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a stunning European-style villa surrounded by lush gardens overlooking Biscayne Bay. Explore the beautifully preserved rooms filled with art and antiques, and wander through the expansive gardens. Next nice area is Miami Design District, known for its luxury boutiques, art galleries, and design showrooms. Also there are impressive public art installations scattered throughout the district. These are just a few highlights of what to do in Miami. Whether you’re interested in art, culture, nature, or simply soaking up the sun, there’s something for everyone to enjoy here.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am very grateful to all my teachers and employers who gave me the knowledge for my success. I am grateful to St. Petersburg State University, as well as the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where I researched and analyzed diamonds of the Siberian platform, and I am grateful to Alla Logvinova and Dmitry Zedgenizov, who were my mentors and inspirers.
