We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Brice and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After a significant career change, not by my choice, I was at a crossroads, and I needed to figure out a plan for my next phase of life. As a true music lover my entire life, I came up with the idea for Mixed Alternative Magazine after being tired of searching for new music alone. I started to notice that most of the publications out there promote who they are paid to promote and that the opinions on the music are generic and lack authenticity. I wanted to provide a free space for independent musicians, artists, and creative types to showcase their skills to the world in an environment full of love and support. No negativity. Only positivity. After launching in October 2022, we have been super busy and can barely keep up with the daily requests we receive. It is an honor to receive requests for coverage, and although we cannot get to everyone just yet, we are steadily adding new contributors, so stay tuned. We hope to be able to cover more creative types soon.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My life so far has been a journey. After college, I embarked on a career in Marketing for a franchisee of a well-known fast-food restaurant chain, and I worked in that role from 2006 to 2020. After being replaced at my job, I was at a crossroads. I had been rejected and felt hopeless. I had no clue what to do or where to turn. A series of vivid dreams told me the path I needed to embark on, so I did, and I have not looked back since. My authenticity in all I do is what sets me apart from others. While most are only after fame and fortune, I decided long ago to make a difference in people’s lives by being authentically me. My magazine, Mixed Alternative Magazine, is committed to providing articles and reviews that are full of heart. We genuinely believe in all the people we write about and will stay committed to that.

If you had a friend visiting you in Louisiana, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, if someone were to visit me from out of town, I would treat them to some Cajun and Creole cuisine only Louisiana can offer. We would visit several dive bars and hole-in-the-wall establishments so I could show them what Louisiana is truly about. When most think of Louisiana, they instantly gravitate towards New Orleans. While New Orleans is a city steeped in rich history, there are other interesting cities and towns to visit in our state, and I would certainly show these places off.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The most significant influence on what I am doing right now is from a book I read before launching Mixed Alternative Magazine. The book is by the fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff and is titled “Fearless: The New Rules for Unlocking Creativity, Courage, and Success.” Rebecca’s unwavering dedication and determination made me feel like I could finally do anything, so I took a leap of faith, and here I am.
