We had the good fortune of connecting with Robert Childers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Robert, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Continuous improvement and cost control. We organize endurance events (triathlons and runs) and always strive to improve every race. That is what makes our events better than others and keeps customers coming back for more. However, that is only 1 side of the coin. The other is keeping expenses under control. I sold the business 10 years ago and the buyers only did the first part. They put on fine events, but overloaded the company with overhead and other expenses and went out of business. So, I’m back!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We organize triathlons and half marathons. We were customers first, so we understand what the customers want. Additionally, we never assume that we know and do surveys whenever we need to know what our customers really want. Sometimes it is what we thought and sometimes it is a surprise. We are proud that we built the business from nothing to a multi-million dollar business over the last 22 years. We even sold it once and came back when the buyers failed. They failed due to lack of cost control, thus I realized that’s my strength. In addition to quality and cost control, our staff is the most important thing in our business. We no longer need the money and simply do it because we enjoy working with them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I like riding off-road, so Oleta River, Virginia Key, and Markham Park are the places for me. If you want to relax on the beach, my favorite is Crandon Park where we host many of our triathlons. I love animals so Zoo Miami is a fun place to visit, and we even have a triathlon that runs through there!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I started organizing triathlons a race official named Steve Waldman gave me lots of guidance and referred me to other race directors and events. This was a tremendous help in getting our business off the ground. I’m still in touch with Steve to this day!
