We had the good fortune of connecting with Verena Lake and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Verena, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Such a good question! I started my business while I was in college where I had a lot of free time to pursue my entrepreneurial interests. I took calls in between my classes and after I did my homework on the weekends I would continue working on my business. Fast forward to now where I work a full-time job, there’s a lot less flexibility during the week because I have a set schedule. Also, there are times when my work week may be busier than usual, so I have less time in the afternoons to work on my business. Saturdays are when I double down on getting the most important stuff done; especially when I need long periods to do focus work. Another element of it is giving myself a lot of grace.

Also, I prefer to use the term ‘harmony’ instead of balance because ‘balance’ means equality. So it signals that I have to give my job, business, and personal life the same amount of time and energy. And to be honest, a lot of the time that just isn’t possible. So I opt to focus more on harmony because harmony gives me the fluidity to say ‘Okay it’s a busy week at work, so I have less time to work on my business’ or ‘I can leave work earlier on this day or on that day so that I have more time to do things for my clients or on my business.’

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Thank you for asking! As far as my business journey, I got where I am today by being intentional about investing in my personal development, especially in the area of cultivating a growth mindset or a success mindset. You can say that I come from a middle-class family. So while we always had our basic necessities, we weren’t rich. Thus, one of the biggest challenges I’ve had to overcome has been my mindset – truly believing that not only do I deserve more, but more is available and I am worthy of it. Another big lesson is that everything happens in God’s perfect timing and trying to rush that timeline only results in frustration and fatigue.

What I’m most proud about is building The Bosslingo Agency. It’s a copywriting and marketing business that helps visionary CEOs stop struggling to write high-converting copy, so they can start supercharging their sales.

At the Bosslingo agency, we leverage personality-filled copy, storytelling strategies, and magnetic branding to help our clients get the industry recognition they deserve while making more money. Our abundance of emotional intelligence and our deep understanding of buyer psychology are what set us apart. Ultimately we really do care about our clients’ success, so we treat each of our clients’ businesses like it’s our own. As a result, every piece of copy we write is infused with a powerful love for storytelling and human connection. This helps our clients to effortlessly attract their dream customers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
OMG! I’m actually really looking forward to when my best friend visits me in my new home again. I recently moved to Chicago about three months ago so I’m still learning the place myself. However, one thing I can definitely recommend is the architecture boat tour! I had such a good time because it’s a really thrilling way to learn about the city while seeing absolutely breathtaking views. Visiting Millennial Park is definitely going to be on the list. It’s one of the more touristy things to do and you are going to run into a lot of people there. However, I would recommend at least doing it one time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
OK so this is going to sound cliché. Nonetheless, I have to give my shoutout to God because He deserves all the credit and glory for my journey. He literally put me in this position to pursue business. The gift and talent I’m profiting from (communication and copywriting) is God-given.

Most importantly God deserves this shoutout because recently I’ve been surrendering my business to Him a lot. And by that, I mean allowing Him to have his way while still showing up and doing the work. Becoming closer to God made me reassess why I want to be a successful entrepreneur. It’s a lot deeper than making money to go on vacations or buy Chanel bags. I’m doing this to start a cycle of generational wealth in my family and ultimately be a blessing to others. On days I doubt myself, He usually gives me a sign to remind me that I’m on the right track.
