We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Zaitsu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I worked at a non-profit then and was offered to work on a month-long project as a freelancer. I had also just given birth to my second child, who required more time and attention. I thought; “Why not open up my own company and change the work pace?”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I worked freelance for the City of Miami Beach’s communications department for about ten years, allowing me to create different video stories. I filmed everything from PSAs to shows and even the most boring city meetings, and that is where I learned to complete a project from start to finish.
I started as a videographer/video editor. Working with different producers and creatives taught me to love interviews. What excites me the most is asking questions, and crafting the video story not knowing how it’ll turn out. It’s always a surprise!
What sets me apart from others is having all those experiences and being able to balance creative video productions and non-creative video shoots. I have different clients, and sometimes all they need is video editing or shooting b-roll, but my favorite thing is heading a project from start to finish!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a best friend or relative visiting Miami, I’d take them to Crandon Park in Key Biscayne. Walk by the abandoned zoo portion and enjoy the low-tide beach. Go for a refreshing beer at the Wetlab (University of Miami’s marine campus). Go to Gramps for karaoke or a live show and end up at Fiorito’s for dinner in Little Haiti.
I don’t know what’s new in town these days because I’m a mother of two little girls, but visiting the Frost, Vizcaya, and MAM would also be on the itinerary. I’ve found a lot of fun things to do in our public library systems, which I recommend to connect with our local creatives.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to a shoutout to my color photography teacher from FIU Peggy Nolan. She always asked the hard questions and encouraged me to pursue a creative field without even knowing!
