We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Sabin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erin, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Her 2nd Chance, Inc. (H2C), founded in 2018, is a 501c3 non-profit in Boca Raton, FL. H2C creates jobs for women in recovery from substance use. South Florida is known as the recovery capital of the world, creating an abundance of women needing a supportive fresh start. We aim to be the launching pad for many women re-entering the workforce in early sobriety. One of our guiding beliefs is that the opposite of addiction is community; we are building a place of community that encourages vulnerability, accountability, and personal growth.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a non-profit social enterprise, we hire women and teach them to design and make giftable products sold on our e-commerce shop (her2ndchance.org) or Etsy (Her2ndChance). Our vision is to crack the code on work that contributes to well-being. Therefore, in addition to traditional work, we also provide programmatic services. These fall under two pillars: Wellness Works and Bridge to Employment.

Our Wellness Works program includes daily meditative breaks, weekly team lunches, monthly well-being workshops, quarterly team building, and community service events. Our Bridge to Employment provides one-on-one career mentoring, resume revisions, and mock interviews designed to help the women in our program as they prepare for community employment. Two H2C Board members also created a curriculum called “Making Difficult Conversations Easier,” which covers topics like dealing with a difficult person or handling a workplace disappointment.

Starting any business venture is never easy! However, having worked with H2C over the years in many capacities, I can say confidently that our team has persevered through the challenges, celebrated successes, learned from mistakes, and continued to advance our mission. By aligning our daily activities with our mission of serving women in recovery, we hired our 100th woman in 2024!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Spanning from Delray to Miami, here is a compilation of our team’s favorite places to take out-of-town guests:

-Patch of Heaven Sanctuary (Miami) for a bit of R&R from the outside world
-A day at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne with a sunset dinner at The Rusty Pelican
-Morikami Museum and Gardens in Delray Beach for a cultural experience
-Silverball Retro Arcade (Delray Beach) for a nostalgic day of fun
-Fratelli’s Italian Restaurant (Delray Beach) for good Italian food
-For a day spent in the water, diving -the southside of the 7-mile bridge in Marathon Key
-Cinema Paradiso for an indie flick
-For outdoor dining after exploring Las Olas, Boathouse at The Riverside
-Sky Thai Sushi in Fort Lauderdale for eclectic sushi rolls

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Every woman on our team, past or present, actively working to make better choices for themselves and their family – they are the real inspiration for our work and deserve the biggest shoutout.

Our Operations Director, Angie Maya, is the creative force behind our initiatives. We are blessed to have her on our team!

I would be remiss if I didn’t also recognize those who have tirelessly advanced the mission of Her 2nd Chance since the beginning: our Founder, Keely Copeland, our Board President, Chris Malfitano, and our Treasurer, Casey Gunnell. Additionally, our Board of Directors continues volunteering their time, talent, and treasure, which is deeply appreciated. Any organization with big goals, like ours, can not be run by one person alone.
