We had the good fortune of connecting with Bobby Cox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bobby, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want my legacy to be..
I want to be remembered as a genuine person who made a long lasting positive impact. I want people to remember me as somebody who had the tenacity to keep going after every obstacle they faced. I want people to remember how hard I worked at everything I put my heart in, to be encouraged that you can make it anywhere even if you don’t have the easiest path, and most importantly that I stayed true to myself and God along the way.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Growing a business is very hard especially with limited resources and little guidance. As I mentioned before, we just wanted to help youth we weren’t necessarily planning on starting a whole business. When we started our weekly training clinics, by our 4th week we had over 80 kids show up and only around 6 coaches so we have been very good at learning on the fly. I personally went through a lot of trail and error, spent a lot of my own money, had clients who refused to pay for high priced jobs after the work was completed, and countless other issues. I had to take my losses and mistakes and learn from them. Everything you go through will either break you or make you better. You always have a choice in the face of adversity. One thing I learned is consistency. Everybody goes through trial and error, some more than others. But as long as you have breath in your body and you are trying, you have a chance. If you give up then you have no shot. One thing people don’t realize is how much I’ve invested in myself to get to where I’m at, from spending my last dollar to travel to a big event across the country I was invited to, or the countless hours I spent doing free work so I can get more repetitions and build brand recognition. When I finally got a clear vision of what I wanted to be and where I wanted to go, I made it a vow to do everything I could to get there. By God’s grace seeing my hard work and sacrifices pay off is very rewarding and is a big relief. I’m still very far from where I want to be, but am very proud of the progress I have made. If you really want something in life, you have to be all in and make a lot of sacrifices.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like to spend most of my free time in nature. Whether I go to the Everglades, or a nice quiet park, I find it very peaceful to be away from the city life where you hear nothing but water flowing, wind blowing, and animals doing what they do. Going for long walks and just observing the simple but complex life of a wild animal is like a reset for me that is needed every once in a while.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout my business partner Cyrus Barlee and our organization No Lackin Lifestyle. We started with a vision to mentor youth in Philadelphia both on the football field and in life, with a goal to give them more guidance and a better chance at success than we had when we were in high school. We first got a camera to make highlights of the kids we work with to help them gain exposure, but people soon recognized my talents with the camera and my work with the camera has since evolved to much more than just highlight tapes. When I started getting requests to shoot events outside of sports I knew I could do something truly special with the camera. So much so that I had to create a whole seperate division for media “NLL Media” (short for No Lackin Lifestyle Media). Now NLL Media operates as a full service media company, we continue to use No Lackin Lifestyle to coach and mentor youth, and have also have had our own 7on7 football team for the past 3 years winning multiple tournaments in the process.
