We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Mercedes Botta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diana Mercedes, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk-taking has shaped me into the person I am today. From a young age, I embraced boldness without hesitation, making decisions that pushed me beyond my comfort zone.
I vividly remember, at just five years old, asking my dad—my former sports coach—if our girls’ soccer team could play against a boys’ team. Our games against other girls’ teams weren’t challenging enough. We went for it, and although we lost, the experience was invaluable. Taking that risk taught me how to confront fear, step outside of my comfort zone, and embrace growth.
That early leap sparked a career defined by daring moves. I’ve never been afraid to jump into new roles. Throughout my professional journey, I’ve worked in nearly every position under the MARCOMs umbrella. From sales to social media, advertising, digital marketing, and creative writing, I explored each aspect of the field, constantly seeking self-improvement because I knew who I wanted to become. These experiences provided the foundation I needed to take the biggest risk of all—launching my own business.
On my 39th birthday, I opened my own company with no external help and very little funding. It was a leap of faith, but the skills and knowledge I gained over the years gave me the confidence to take that step.
Had I not embraced risk throughout my life, I wouldn’t have achieved my goals or found what truly ignites my passion—entrepreneurship. Taking risks has been the key to realizing my dreams and creating a future that excites me every day.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
That’s an excellent question because I am a multifaceted creative—creating is in my DNA, and it’s what truly sets me apart. I refuse to be defined by a single title because I’m someone who learns quickly, masters what I learn, and applies that mastery across various domains. My journey began with music and writing, which led me to explore the performing arts, visual arts, communication, and, more recently, the healing arts.
As a child, I was immersed in creativity—singing, graphic design, and writing. As an adult, I channeled my creativity into marketing and advertising, where I not only honed my craft but also supported other creatives, bridging the gap between artistry and business. Nothing in life comes easily, but I’ve always been bold enough to follow my passion—whether it was creating, teaching, or inspiring others to become the best versions of themselves.
Along the way, I faced challenges, but I learned to overcome them with the help of yoga and therapy. These tools allowed me to tame my creative mind and find balance. Creatives like myself often struggle with this balance, as our deepest emotions and passions pour into our work, leaving us drained. Fear can be a major obstacle, but by confronting my fears, I found peace, balance, and harmony within myself and my creative pursuits.
One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned in life is the importance of slowing down. Living in the present moment is crucial. Focusing too much on the past or future can cause us to miss the beauty and opportunities right in front of us. My mission in life is to share this insight with others: we all have the power within us to overcome our challenges and fears, unlocking the fullest version of ourselves.
This journey has led me to a place where I can now teach, guide, and support those who are navigating similar paths. We all need positive leaders and mentors, and I am deeply committed to empowering the next generation to reach their highest potential.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I could take someone on a tour of my hometown, I’d start with the place I’m most grateful to call home—Miami Beach. Every day, I count my blessings knowing I was born and raised in a city that people from all over the world dream of visiting. Our day would begin early, before the city wakes up. We’d head to the beach to watch the sunrise—because in Miami, sunrises are something out of this world. To catch the magic, we’d be up and out by 5:00 a.m.
After soaking in the breathtaking view, we’d grab a fresh cup of coffee or juice at a local café or hotel to fuel up. From there, we’d take a walk or a run over the iconic Key Biscayne Bridge—one of the best spots to stay active while surrounded by water and nature. Miami is a city full of surprises, and tucked away in its heart are hidden gems like the Kampong and Fairchild Botanical Gardens, where you can experience Florida’s natural beauty in its purest form.
We’d then slow things down, heading down to the Upper and Lower Keys. There, we’d enjoy water sports, indulge in fresh seafood, and unwind with the most relaxing sunsets. Miami isn’t just a city—it’s a melting pot of fascinating people and places. To truly experience it all, you have to keep an open mind. The diversity here is unmatched. You don’t have to travel far to immerse yourself in a new language or culture—Miami is a world within itself, where people from all walks of life come together.
And no Miami tour is complete without a visit to Coconut Grove, a neighborhood close to my heart. This charming community always offers something new and exciting, and you can feel the energy of its vibrant, ever-changing spirit. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s always something to discover in Miami.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes! It all began at home, with the unwavering love and support of my parents, who are still happily married. The foundation they gave me is priceless. They taught me the true meaning of love, kindness, and the importance of never judging others, for we don’t know the stories they carry. My parents also fostered my creativity, giving me the freedom to pursue my dreams. Whether I wanted to play sports or explore music, they were always there, cheering me on. Having such loving, supportive parents is everything. As the saying goes, it all starts at home—everything from ethics and values to building a strong moral compass.
I was also fortunate to have been surrounded by incredible teachers and mentors who profoundly impacted my life. This is why I chose to become a teacher and mentor myself. Positive leadership, coaching, and a strong support system are what propel us forward. I’ve always believed that the people you surround yourself with shape who you are and where you go in life. Being in the presence of positive influences has been key in helping me leap toward my goals.
From my elementary and middle school music teachers to my high school graphic design instructors and college professors, each one pushed me to chase my dreams. As I entered the workforce at 17, I was lucky enough to cross paths with leaders who shaped my professional journey. Every person I’ve met, whether their influence was positive or not-so-positive, has taught me invaluable life lessons. These lessons have been integral in shaping who I am today.
I’m deeply grateful for the many teachers and mentors who’ve guided me, too numerous to name. However, the two most important influences in my life remain my parents, whose love and wisdom laid the groundwork, and my husband, Gaston, who has been my unwavering backbone for the past 16 years.
