We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Isabel Segura and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria Isabel, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
As an architect and interior designer, I have learned that if you can dream it, you can achieve it, no goal is impossible, and that life is better with color and creativity. I want my legacy to be how creativity and design can be a powerful healing tool that fosters physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I want people to remember me as a light on the path, as a story of motivation and personal growth. Like many others, I emigrated from Costa Rica to Miami to live a better life and have more opportunities. I had to find courage and face risky open-heart surgery at 23, where I learned that sometimes it is necessary to risk everything and start over. Ultimately, I want people to remember me as an indomitable personality who fought hard to make her dreams a reality and that the greatest satisfaction of all is being able to say that I made my dreams a reality while helping many people improve their quality of life through interior design and holistic wellness.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My story is about a Design dream that came true and proves that everything has a reason to be. I believe nothing is impossible and everything is possible if you work hard to accomplish your dreams.

I love describing myself as a tropical beauty, a dreamer born in a small paradise, Costa Rica. Like many immigrants with an exotic mixed background, one day, I decided to pursue my dreams and moved to Miami in 2018. I am the result of a Cuban dad and a Nicaraguan mom who taught me that everything is possible when you work hard for it.

After a risky open-heart surgery, I am living a second life opportunity, where creativity, resilience, and persistence have become my main friends. Since I was a child, my curiosity about how to design and create spaces motivated me to pursue a career in architecture, and some years later, in 2018, I became a Register Architect in Costa Rica. Later in 2019, I decided to move to Miami to study a Master’s in Interior Architecture; so, finally, in Spring 2022, I graduated with honors from FIU. However, design, creativity, and environmental psychology were always present, and my leadership and entrepreneurship desires were also present. Still, in 2015, I had to face open heart surgery to save my life. Hence, that moment motivated me to pursue a career in healthcare design, and in 2018, I decided to found my design brand, MS ARQUITECTURA E INTERIORISMO, in Costa Rica. Initially, I was looking to build a design community focusing on interior architecture, wellness, and health, explicitly showing how to use interior design and architecture as a powerful healing tool to enhance living quality and overall well-being. Finally, in 2022, my dream came true, and MS DESIGN, WELLNESS & HEALTH became a reality in Miami. Now, I work as a Wellness Interior Designer, mainly for residential consultancy, designing unique spaces to heal and promote holistic interior tendencies that enhance life quality.
MS DESIGN, WELLNESS & HEALTH is my dream come true through an Interior Architecture Lab that combines my greatest passions: creativity, design, and well-being. Furthermore, it aims to promote design to be more than luxury and aesthetics; Interior Architecture can be used as a powerful healing tool to improve and enhance your overall health, wellness, and well-being by designing a proper healing environment at your home. It is a fact that we are the result of the physical environment in which we live; that’s why an appropriate environment will help you embrace a better version of yourself. Hence, I would say that the success of my design brand is based on the combination of my passions, and it is helping me promote a better quality of life for my clients. Through my Interior Design Lab practice, I offer services like Design Coaching, Professional Design Shopper, Healing Interior Design Residential Layout and Conceptualization, Consultancy, Healing Color Pallete Creation, and more! Visit my webpage or my IG to contact me and book my services, and remember that if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me! It will be a pleasure to guide you!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a person that loves to explore and be in direct contact with nature, also love to discover new places to share a coffee and quality time with people that are important to me, like family and friends. Hence, if my best friend would visit me in Miami I will show him natural spots like the Bayfront Park and will look for a nice place to eat and share coffee in Coconut Grove or in Coral Gables. Also, Brickell and Biscayne are other excellent options to explore and visit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my story to my parents because, without them, nothing would be possible. They’ve always been there to support me, guide me, motivate me when I felt hopeless, and, most importantly, believe in me when no one else would.
