We had the good fortune of connecting with Rick Lesser and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rick, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Ask yourself do you love what you do? If you answer yes then there’s no giving up. There may be a point in which you hit a wall and you’re not as engaged or as excited as you once were. Ok it happens to everyone. But if at the end of the day is only seeing yourself as whatever your chosen profession is, then there is no giving up you just look within that community and see what else you can do to expand your profession

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I can truly say I have no clue how I got to where I am. Luck and being in the right place definitely helped. I just put one foot in front of the other and kept going. I’ve been doing this for so long. I looked at every opportunity that was handed to me and decided if it was right me to do. Even if it could have turned into something more if it doesn’t hold my interest then not happening. Everything I’ve accomplished or even failed at I see as a stepping stone that adds to what I bring to the table. You can look good on paper but if you have no experience then you better be a fast thinker and talker with a personality. When I was first starting I was naive, I was so intuitive and clever but didn’t realize it at the time. In my early twenties things really started to make sense. Orlando Florida was such a cow town. It would stifle anyone that showed any potential, any artistic flair. it would try to crush that
individual as most small towns I’m sure do. I knew I
needed to find a way out. The first opportunity came for me after meeting someone that I had a quick fling with. He invited me to join him in Houston. Things went South fast but I landed a job
at Neiman Marcus’s hair salon. When I came back
home my friend and I went to visit a psychic. I was
floored at what she told me. Her last words were
“oh I see you’re moving to Texas don’t go
something better will come soon” 6 months later I
moved to New York. Opportunity came to me the strangest ways in New York again I just went where the universe put me never really thinking about my future it always just seemed to unfold in front of me. Five years later I came back to Florida. In the beginning regretting that choice but I made the best of it. Again just doing things that I found interesting within the beauty industry. It’s all led to a strong resume. I had no plan but obviously the universe and God did.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have such a diverse bunch of friends. One thing we do all have in common is we are around the same age. And we’ve certainly have seen and done a lot. Lots of stories and adventures to tell. With that said we might start off on a trip on the Water Taxi. It’s something that most people don’t think about. You can go up and down the Intracoastal and get a great overview of Fort Lauderdale from the water. There’s always an interesting story being told by the captain. You can stop along the way going bar hopping get back on and continue to the next restaurant and or bar it’s a great day something quite different. Oceans 234 in Deerfield on the beach is a restaurant I love. I met Danielle the owner years ago through my friends Mindi and Hank. They published three different magazines hosting many events that I attended and always ran into Danielle. And again depending upon which friend it is there’s always a trip to Aventura Mall or PGA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents. They always encouraged me that no matter what I chose to do,

One: if you’re going to do something be the best at it that you can be.

Two: If you’ve given something your all and it isn’t working, it’s ok to admit it and walk away.

Three: love what you do.
