We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooklyn Kohl and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooklyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
There’s an element of danger when it comes to taking risks. The word itself even sounds like a derogatory term – similar to the word “mistake”. However, just like making mistakes, taking a risk offers invaluable life lessons and opportunities that you may not receive otherwise. Being a musician and writer, risks have taken on an exciting and necessary new meaning to me. Without taking a risk to move across the country on my own to pursue music, I would not have met the people in my life that have motivated and pushed me forward in my career, played at beautiful venues, or had a few heartaches to write about. Being uncomfortable, in regards to trying new things and not allowing my creativity to stay stagnant, has become a bit of a life motto for me over the last two years and I don’t see that stopping anytime soon.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a singer-songwriter that works hard at crafting daily observations and ordinary life into soulful moments through smooth pop R&B music with a twist of jazz. I was born and raised in a small town in the Midwest, which came with its own set of small-minded challenges that I still have to consciously set aside at times – such as personal insecurities, making connections (before moving to larger cities/communities), and having to work other full-time jobs to make ends meet. However, I also knew it would be beyond worth it to overcome these somewhat typical challenges as an artist in order to connect with people on a vulnerable and intimate way that only music can do. I took gigs that weren’t as glamorous or didn’t pay as well starting out but always made sure to take care of my band as much as possible, I’ve moved several times when the opportunities presented themselves and met some of my mentors and best friends along the way, and, with time and lots of working through my past, was able to accept my voice and artistry for what it is today. Having lived in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Salt Lake City, my creative vision and musical style continues to evolve as I try to make sense of the craziness that is life, hoping my music genuinely connects with others who feel the same. I am extremely passionate about giving back to the communities I live in as well as diversity and gender equality in the industry.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Would love to give a shoutout to my friends and fellow artists Brëz, Austin Payne, and Caleb Elzinga who continue to inspire me as creatives and always bring me back to why we do what we do.
