Meet Jay Veal, M.Ed. | The 6 Figure Tutor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Veal, M.Ed. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The funny thing is that I never wanted to be in entrepreneurship originally. I thought I was going to be a CIO of a Fortune 100 company. My background was in the IT and Tech space and then in 2008 I ventured off into the education space. My first teaching assignment was at my alma mater, Townview Science & Engineering Magnet HS. I was tasked in my first year of teaching to teach a class called Fast Track Mathematics. I taught Freshman 3 years of Pre AP math in one year. So, there was Pre AP Geometry, Pre AP Algebra 2, and Pre AP Precalculus. Once done teaching for the year, all my students earned 100% PERFECT scores on the state exam which was unheard of in Dallas. After that, I decided to teach 3.5 more years all other math courses in high school. So, at the end of the 4.5 years, I taught every single math in high school at the regular, Pre AP, and AP levels. I then became a Campus Math Instructional Coach teaching teachers where I brought a campus from 65% failing to 95% passing for the Algebra 1 exam in a year. Then, I was a District level STEM Instructional Coach over 7 schools for math, science, and tech. Then, I was a Math Interventionist and Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at a University for 4 years. In the middle of all of this, in 2015, I started INC Tutoring, which is now INC Education. I noticed there was a gap between what students of color were not getting in the classroom for support and what they weren’t getting outside the classroom for support. So, the company was born and that started my journey as an entrepreneur. I started knocking door to door, bootstrap, grassroots to start the company. No venture capital or investment and started on my way. To make a long story short, we went from a one man show to now 105 people strong between DFW, Chicago, DC, Austin, and Atlanta. The next cities to dive deeper into are Charlotte and Miami. We are now the #1 AA owned private education and tutoring company in the Southern US and recently named by Business Insider the top ONLINE tutoring company for people of color (BIPOC) in the whole US! We have been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, NBC, Black Enterprise and more. I also am founder of The Jay Veal Brand, LLC which is an education, business, and credit consulting brand and Founder of Black Tutors of Social Media, a new edtech nonprofit that on the front end is a marketplace/platform for black owned private tutoring companies to offer their tutoring services at large and on the back end houses 6 nonprofit community programs for students in tutoring for severely disadvantaged, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, mentoring, college tours, and travel programs.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
INC Education really sets us apart from others in the way that we provide tutoring and educational services to students. We have an award winning approach in tutoring that is prescriptive and holistically driven and millennial motivated. In addition, we mentor our students and provide backend support. Utilizing this approach, we have a 95% success rate of our students earning As and Bs in over 50 subjects company wide. Our team is millennial based and we are about 95% minority. Our leadership team is all African-American as well which makes it unique. However, our tutoring team is very diverse with consultants of all ethnicities and backgrounds. I am most proud that we have went from a one man show company 5 years ago, to now we are an over half million dollar company with 105 consultants nationwide. We are now the #1 AA owned private education and tutoring company in the Southern US and the top online tutoring company for BIPOC in the nation! However, the team we have built is impeccable and we have impacted over 10,000+ students. We just earned the prestigious Men Impact Change award for Advancing the Legacy of Change in Education in November and earned an Executive Citation for national impact from Baltimore County. We are also the first black owned private education and tutoring company to be featured in all 3 top global business media outlets for our impact. I got to where I am business wise by hard work and being very persistent amongst any situations that provided adversity. In addition, I had to take risk like when I recently moved to Atlanta to grow the company deeper there and in Charlotte. The problem that many black owned small businesses do not get much of the VC funding in order to grow their businesses. That is a challenge, so continuing to bootstrap and self fund is what is needed to move the needle forward while we try to apply to accelerators and more. INC Education spearheaded the movement for Black Tutors of Social Media, which is a new edtech nonprofit org. On the front end, it is a marketplace platform for black owned private tutoring companies to offer their services at large along with share resources and connect. On the backend, it is a 6 program nonprofit for students impacting in tutoring, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, mentoring, college tours, and travel.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am new to the Atlanta area. However, I can try my best to show them a few things. Food: Slutty Vegan, Blue Moon Pizza, 10 Degrees South, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, Mary Mac’s, Season’s 52, or Twisted Soul Drinks: Cirque, Punch Bowl Social, Little Trouble, The Lawrence, The Garden Room, and Little Spirit Hanging Out: Any where in Buckhead, Midtown, Little 5 Points, Vinings, Smyrna or Edgewood

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my parents for believing in my mission in what I am doing and supporting me to move forward even when I didn’t have a clear path on building the company. I thank my TEAM at INC Education. Without them, we would not have been able to impact over 10,000 students or win over 13 awards now for our prescriptive and holistic approach in education and tutoring. I want to thank our clients for trusting us to work with their students and bring them to the success that they deserve so they can graduate and become positive contributors to society. Anyone that has shared our story, articles, posts, results and more we thank them to help further our agenda to continue being the best.
