We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I look at risk as a vast, open door for opportunity. Ever since I was a child, I’ve always been encouraged to take risks. I think in society we fear risk because it involves putting ourselves out there, out of our comfort zone, with the chance that we get nothing in return. Starting Pop Queen was a big risk, and the launching of a frozen desert manufacturing business has so many complex and intricate parts that I was unaware of until I dove in. There are a lot of moving parts I had never considered, but I have never looked back. I left NYC, and moved to Miami with nothing but a risk in my pocket. Since then, my life has taken 1000 steps forward, I’ve learned so many extremely valuable things, and I feel fulfilled. We do events to get the name out locally and people have come up and said, “We only came to this event today because we saw you were going to be here! We’re so glad you’re here!” That feels good. Creating something that people not only love, but also is healthy for them is one of the best feelings I’ve ever felt. I love risk – not only because it is uncertain, but because every risk I’ve ever taken, I have been glad I took. The outcomes are always better than I had hoped for. Risk makes us grow, it provides opportunity, and it challenges us. What’s not to love?
What should our readers know about your business?
The entire concept of Pop Queen came to me in a dream. In my dream, not only was I fulfilled, but I had the platform to inspire positive change. I had the same dream every night for four weeks straight, and then decided I had to chase it. We do more than make ice pops – we educate the community about our environment and the significance of bees. We empower people to make healthier decisions. We support local farms and businesses. We set up children for dietary success. We compost. We put so much love into everything we do. Being the only frozen dessert company that sweetens our products with honey over sugar sets us apart quite a bit. Our ice pops are something you can feel good about eating. They are not only good for the soul, but for the mind and body, too.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would go restaurant hopping – Wake up at 6 AM & do a 1-2 hour long work out, followed by a meditation to get us up, moving, and excited for the day to come. We would start with breakfast at Phil’s Berry Farm where you can get delicious monkey bread, among other tasty treats. Then we would walk around the Fruit & Spice Park while our food settled. We would then head over the Mr. & Mrs. Bun for a small bite followed by the Jealous Fork. Then we would head closer to North Miami and I would show them my beehives, and we could sample some honey right from the hive. A very special treat! By the early evening, we would head over to Miami Beach where we could bike around South Pointe Park and bike all the way up to have dinner at Silver Lake Bistro. We would close the evening at Lagniappe where there is live jazz every night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The entrepreneurship circle in Miami is strong. Since starting Pop Queen, I have had the honor of crossing paths with many ethical start ups. One of those is called Munai. Munai is a macrame company that empowers and supports women in the workforce in Bolivia. There is so much thought, love, and creativity behind what they do. They inspire me, and I hope they inspire you too.
