We had the good fortune of connecting with Fabiola Marquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fabiola, how does your business help the community?
Hi, My name is Fabiola Marquez and I’m the founder of WARIMBA, an Artisanal Design brand for wellbeing. WARIMBA means “SAFE PLACE”, that part within, where one finds deeper states of relaxation and blissfulness. We describe ourselves as a community of dreamers and artists united for the love of handmade art. Nowadays, we live in a civilization where most of the production processes are industrialized, or worse yet, poorly paid. This results in lower production costs and artisanal production processes tend to have much higher costs than mass-produced products. In Yucatan, Mexico, artisanal labor is the basis of income of many families who live in rural areas. These communities struggle to preserve their art and traditions as a consequence of the industrialization that has caused many to abandon their craftsman work for several reasons. First, it is very difficult to compete with the price of products that machines manufacture, their cost is notoriously lower and therefore the sale price is lower too. Another reason is that a machine-made product can be done much faster than a handmade product, so while an artisan in a month can do between one and two hammocks (depending on experience and the type of weaving technique used), a machine can produce hundreds of similar goods even in less time. When I founded Warimba in 2016, I always knew this was going to be a challenge. And let me tell you, it has. But when looking back and savoring everything we have created and all the families we have helped, I stop and say: Thank You. Each one of our hammocks is a unique artisanal piece that no machine can imitate. Our artisans use ancient techniques they have learned from generations. We help preserve the art and traditions of families in Yucatan that need it the most by loving their work, paying fair prices and sharing to the world what their hearts create with their hands.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We create hammocks, aromatherapy goods and yoga mat carriers designed to remind always the joy of the Here & Now.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
