We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Erika Fulmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendra Erika, how do you define success?
1) I began a career in music, and I made sure that I did the most of it independently to maintain those entrepreneurial principles. I have my own label now called OysterShell Music “because my music’s an aphrodisiac”. As an artist, you are your own brand, and I appreciate anyone who can build themselves individually. 2) As an artist and songwriter, I always make a steadfast effort to have every word that I write and sing be as true to who I am, and what my message is. Music is the one of the most ultimate ways to get to the masses and people, and to be original and not push any agenda that is untrue to who you are and what you stand for is imperative and so meaningful for the world. 3) Being a creative in this world is especially risky. You’re putting yourself out there and opening yourself up to so much, both negative and positive. However, when you’re authentic, and when you don’t sell out, you’ll win the war, and beat any obstacles that may come your way. When it comes to me and my life and career, I never really saw any risks, because I naturally stuck to who I am, and never followed through on any opportunity to sell out. 4) Being that I’m a cat mom, the most important thing I have done is rescue her. 5) I feel being independent is the most important factor behind what I’ve achieved so far. Maintaining self control, no pun intended, in your creativity and how you maximize and capitalize of that principle, is how your brand is successful. 6) Giving up for me is not an option. 7) Having a balance in your line of work is quite achievable. It all boils down to your surroundings. Surrounding yourself with like-minded, or people that inspire, that make you laugh, that make you think, and that bring something supportively creative to the table, is then you can maintain that balance. 8) What makes me happy is when I can do what I love, travel, and experience new things, and still knowing I have my roots to come home to. 9) It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I grew up on watching Disney movies, and the song and dance aspect of them gravitated towards me. I knew I always wanted to perform, but then I discovered I had an innate sense in song writing. So, that’s what propelled me to pursue the artistic and creative side of my career. 10) Success to me is when you have freedom. The money always tastes great, but the freedom tastes even greater.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In a nutshell, I was born tone deaf. I had to work hard for my instrument, which is my voice. I applied my work ethic that my parents instilled in me, and overcame that obstacle. My dad told me “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”, and throughout my career and dev development, I’ve witnessed people are talented take it for granted. Therefore, I’ve had to work for it, so I appreciate it so much more.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Like everything, I have ideas of where I would take them, however, like I do in the studio and in creative settings, I let the plans happen in the moment. What’s the fun in mapping up an itinerary. Definitely Boca, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami have many hot spots to enjoy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to say thank you to the City of Boca Raton for being so supportive in my development as an artist, and as a woman.
