We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Di Lorenzo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic career because it was the only thing I knew I could do really well, I knew that I really enjoyed doing it and I knew I could make a career of it. It made me extremely happy and it made other people happy. As a comedian, I LOVE making people laugh. Ever since I was little, my whole family encouraged me to act, dance, paint and be silly. They never questioned my decision of wanting to become an actress and that really helped. My family is also made up of incredible artists. My grandfather is painter, my grandmother was seamstress, my aunts and uncles were all either musicians or painters and my dad is also a musician so it wasn’t too hard to convince them to let me do my thing. I knew I could be a successful comedian and so far I have been.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from other artists is that I’m a well-rounded actress. I can write, direct, produce, do my own make-up, costumes, and edit. I also don’t mind looking ugly in front of the camera, Amy Poehler once said “Vanity is the death of comedy” and I try to remember that whenever I’m working on my comedy. I’m really excited about all the things I’ve been writing with my best friend and writing partner, Mimi Davila. We have a lot of things regarding The Chonga Girls that are really special that will hopefully come out soon. I got to where I am today by taking risks and believing in myself even when I was going through the terrible impostor syndrome, which can be debilitating but with the help of family and friends I know that I can always get out of that mindset. I’ve learned not to put so much pressure on myself and to stop comparing myself to others. It doesn’t help anyone, and everyone has their own path, as cheesy as I sound, BUT it’s true! I want people to know that I’m an immigrant from Venezuela that came here when I was only seven years old and that my dreams of becoming a mainstream comedian are only starting. I want to create comedy that everyone can relate to, not just Latinos. I just want to make the world laugh.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love LA cuisine so much, I’d probably do a food tour. I’d start at Koreatown and take them to a good old fashioned Korean BBQ restaurant, then head over to a taco truck where we’ll eat tacos al pastor, then Thai town for some bomb pad thai, Little Tokyo for some Ramen and end at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. All in one day lol. I’d take them on a hike at Griffith park all the way to the observatory. Go to the beach in Malibu. Get drinks at Escala. Watch a movie in Vista theater. Watch a comedy show at Groundlings. There’s a lot to do, I can go on forever.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big shout out to my college, New World School of the Arts in Downtown Miami. NWSA is a big reason I am a well-rounded actress. They provided me with the tools to how to write my own stories, how to do my own character make-up, how to make my own costumes, how to build a set! My incredible acting teachers, James Randolph, Gail Garrison, David Kwiat, and many more encouraged me to work hard and dig deep into my characters. I cherish them very much.
