Meet Isadora Velazquez | Immigration Attorney

We had the good fortune of connecting with Isadora Velazquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Isadora, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?

I was born on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico to a Puerto Rican father and a Venezuelan mother. My mother deeply loves her country and would have never left Venezuela had she not met my charming father while studying abroad in the United States. It was never her intent to live the life of an immigrant nor did she ever need to, yet love chose her path. I had the honor of being raised in paradise until the tender age of 15 when my entire family moved to Venezuela for my father to pursue a great employment opportunity. While living in Caracas I had the privilege of attending an international school in which I was exposed to a wide variety of different cultures I probably would have never experienced had I spent the rest of my life sheltered in the magnificence of my island Puerto Rico. After high school, I moved to Miami for college. To survive I had to work in the city I eventually turned into my new home. When I started doing so I finally witnessed what some may consider the life of an immigrant. I worked alongside immigrants who spent so much time searching for the best visa opportunity or living in anonymity for their own protection. My coworkers, colleagues, friends, and family deeply shaped who I am and what I do. I practice immigration law because I witnessed firsthand how immigrants have made and continue to keep the United States as the amazing country it has been since being founded by the immigrants who fought for it in 1776.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After practicing Immigration Law in other law firms with a variety of partners, Isa Law officially opened in 2019. It was originally founded along with its only paralegal and the backbone of the firm, Alina Del Castillo. Since its inception the firm has substantially grown yet it continues to provide its clients with personalized care. While other firms might be too busy to keep clients informed, Isa Law strives on client communication. As a firm founded by the children of immigrants, we understand the process and how it feels to live it from the other side. We know that there is nothing worse than not knowing what is happening during a process as stressful and life changing as immigrating to another country like the United States. Similarly, we understand the government does not always exemplify transparency when dealing with sensitive matters in immigration. The effort to keep the client informed of their own case and the many changes in immigration law sets the firm apart. The firm deeply cares about its clients and it shows. We are most proud of our civic involvement. Instead of merely complaining about the way immigrants have been treated throughout the ages, we get active in the process by speaking out through media appearances whether on local television, radio, or print on local newspapers. Building and growing the firm to where it is today has not been easy. We have been forced to learn that a successful law firm cannot run solely on passion. To be successful the firm requires structures and systems in place that go well beyond simply practicing law. Learning and implementing said systems has been challenging. To date we continue to learn and grow while we strive to provide the best possible service to our clients. We would like our clients to know that we care; that we have lived the immigrant experience and understand it; that immigrants built this amazing country and its diversity makes it one of the best places to live in. Once we value who the immigrant is and all they do, our country and the World will change for the best.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely go to Wynwood. We would start every morning sipping delicious Cuban coffee at Suite Habana Cafe. From there we would enjoy daily tours from Wynwood Buggies. Even an entire week would not be enough to admire all that Wynwood has to offer. We would have fresh lunches at La Sandwicherie. On one of the days we would book a private tour of Wynwood Walls also done by Wynwood Buggies and we would shop at the Art of Golden since any friend of mine would be able to appreciate good art (and colorful rainbow farting unicorns). We would have dinner at one of the many amazing restaurants in Wynwood like my all time favorite Kyu. We would enjoy a nice cold beer at one of Wynwood’s many breweries like Veza Sur. Lastly, we would probably finish each night dancing or enjoying live music at a local Wynwood spot like Barter or Gramps. Wynwood has it all to enjoy Miami to the fullest during a whole week and more.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I was taught that if I worked hard good things would happen. However, I noticed others around me who worked just as hard but were not as “lucky” and others who completely slacked yet “succeeded.” I have come to learn that hard work is relevant but our own life circumstances and the people around us play an important role. I was lucky to be raised by great parents who believe in me. They blessed me with an amazing baby sister Marisa Velazquez, a renowned artist living in Philadelphia. While I have always been grounded and boring, my sister Marisa has never been afraid to fly. She has inspired me to spread my wings. Meanwhile, while my life circumstances have undoubtedly set the grounds for success, it has been my Argentinean husband Christian Romero’s support that ultimately motivated me to fully pursue my dreams. However, the law firm would have never been successful without its backbone, our amazing paralegal and office administrator Alina Del Castillo. There will never be enough words to thank her for all that she does and all that she is.
