We had the good fortune of connecting with Maryann Rivera-Dannert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maryann, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This is such a great question, because this is something that I have dealt with and pondered several times over the years. There have been other business ventures that I’ve, after careful consideration, closed down. I think I was born with an entrepreneur spirit because I’ve taken the leap on numerous things. I think the key point is asking yourself – why? Why did you start the business? Why do you want to give up? What will life look like in [give yourself a time frame], if I give up or continue? It’s important to weigh all the pros and cons of both options: keep going or give up. If one’s “why”, as to why we started our business is clear, more often than not, we will not give up. Additionally, it’s important to discuss our feelings and thoughts with a mentor – someone that necessarily does not have a vested financial interest in whatever the outcome is. Maybe what needs to happen is to take a break to reflect, regroup and restart. That’s is what happened with my life coaching business. Things were not going how I envisioned, and I knew my calling, so I knew closing the business was not an option. I took a break, thought long and hard about my “why”, got clearer and pressed on.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
So, in addition to being a life coach, author, trainer and speaker, I am also a human resources professional. Previously to being an HR professional, I was an executive assistant. I got into HR, not just because of a promotion, but because I believed in myself and I did not give up. I saw a need in the organization that I was working in at the time, I plead my case as to why they should take a chance on me and 10 years later, I’m still working in HR. I’ve worked in numerous industries, and that is one of the things that sets me apart in terms of HR. Human Resources has a lot of disciplines, and I’m well versed in them all. I have seen a lot in human resources as it pertains to individuals seeking employment. And because of the gap I’ve noticed in the workplace, and with people looking for work, etc., I’ve recently rebranded and in addition to being a life coach, I’m also a career consultant. I help people with resume writing, cover letters, interviewing techniques, how to dress for the interview and how to keep the job. I’ve even helped individuals craft resignation letters. It has not always been easy, because when I first got into HR I didn’t have any true experience. However, my employer at the time helped me by paying for my training and connecting me with the right people, which allowed for a lot of hands on learning. One of the important takeaways, relating to challenges that may arise, are not to give up, believe in yourself and if you’re unsure of anything, ask. People are willing to walk alongside you and help you, but you have to put pride aside and ask for help. I’ve only recently added the career track to my coaching, and that happened because of my Strategic Coach. It’s important to tap into all of our skillset and make it work for our benefit. As The Fearless Living Coach, I have a true desire to see people succeed. My approach is wholistic – meeting the individual where they’re at, and leading them to where they desire to be. Everything that I teach on and speak about, is because I’ve experienced it personally. My personal experiences, coupled with my professional training – make me a force to be reckoned with.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, this is a tough one. I’ve been in Florida for four years now and I’m in the Orlando area. What drew me to Florida was the beach and sunshine. Okay, based on what I’ve seen and been too our itinerary would be, given my BFF will be here for a week: Day one – catching up with cocktails and a good cigar. We’ll be going to Corona Cigar Company & Diamond Crown Lounge in downtown Orlando. Day two – it’s spa time and we’re heading to The Woodhouse Day Spa, also in Orlando. Day three, we’ll check out Disney Springs and City Walk and while we’re there grab an early dinner at one of the local restaurants and then we’ll head out to desert and for desert, we’ll go to Better Than Sex – yes, that is the name! Day four – check out some state parks and check out the alligators and manatees. Day five – time to go to the beach and we’ll head over to the west coast and check out Clearwater and St. Pete’s beaches. Day six – we’ll head to the other coast and check out New Smyrna and Daytona Beaches. Day seven – relax and make plans for our next visit. I’ll definitely need to start exploring more.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love this! My biggest supporter in life is my husband, James Dannert! No matter what I need to do, want to do, have to do, would like to do, he has my back 100%. There are moments, as stated previously, that I have moments of doubts and he just knows: he looks at me and says, “OK Sweetie, what is going on, let’s talk”. Pouring myself out to him, openly and honestly, is so refreshing and freeing. I’m of the mindset that you have to spend money to make money, and I’m grateful my husband understands that and he’s fully on board.
