We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia McFarlane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I began creating TYM, I had the vision to create a brand in dedication to my sister and other children diagnosed with Rett syndrome. TYM derived from my sister’s name, Tyler Mary J. This rare genetic disorder impaired her ability to walk, speak, breathe and care for herself — for life. Over the years, I’ve watched Tyler face her daily challenges with courage. Her tenacity inspired me to face my fears and pursue my inner calling with TYM Botanicals being the result. I created TYM to be more than a company that puts out products that claims to care about its environment and community, but rather to put action to our words. It’s essential for me to connect with my community through my work. All of our formulations are conduit to ensuing and harvesting that connection in an authentic and truthful way based on our means as a small company, feeling very sentimental to me.
What should our readers know about your business?
TYM Botanicals is a new way of thinking about organic skin care. Elevating high performance botanicals and sustainable practices — for an effective but gentle solution for skin and planet. Refined to the essentials providing advanced multi-correctional formulations that regenerate and revitalize below the surface for transformative results. All our products are free of animal ingredients or animal by-products. We’re cruelty-free and vegan certified through PETA. Our steadfast standards don’t just stop there. TYM Botanicals also protects the environment by ensuring all our shipping materials and packaging are recyclable, biodegradable, and made of post-consumer waste. We focus on every detail, so you can reap the benefits, carefree. We made a pledge to give back in our way by partnering with the Rett Syndrome Organization. Creating a brand that specifically focuses on that has been one of the most motivational things about the daily operations of TYM. We donate 1% of all sales to the Rett Syndrome Organization, whose mission is to accelerate full spectrum research to cure Rett syndrome and empower families with information, knowledge and connectivity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami is one of a kind and has so much to offer. Although going out looks bit different Miami is fortunate to have warm weather year round and can offer outdoor dining even in the winter months. We are so privileged to live in such a diverse and unique city. If I had a friend in town I would start our day off with brunch at Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill in Midtown. It has a cozy outdoor garden feel and they offer some great cocktails and mocktails. Afterward we’d visit Bal Harbor Shops or Miami Design District for an amazing curated shopping experience. Followed by Happy Hour at Sugar a rooftop bar located @ East Miami in Brickell with breath taking views and chill vibes. For dinner I’d reserve an outdoor table at La Mar by Gastón Acurio to take in the views of the bay and downtown Miami while enjoying a true taste of Peru. Then for the night cap head to Lagniappe a cozy New Orleans0 style wine bar with live music and great company. . During the week, it would be a mixture of outdoor and self-care activities like kayaking at Oleta State Park, renting a beach cabana in one of Miami Beach hotels using daycation.com, visiting different hotel bar and speakeasies and definitely would not miss out on a day at the spa for some pampering and relaxation. There are so many beautiful neighborhoods and parks in Miami to explore and something for everybody to enjoy. It’s a good time to go exploring but don’t forget to wear your mask.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends have been a huge driving force in supporting me. No matter what I decide to do I know they will have my back and give me the tools I need to be successful. I don’t express to them often enough how grateful and appreciative I am to have them by my side. Outside of that, it’s amazing how supportive strangers have been to my brand. I’ve received a multitude of humbling messages from our customers, our social media followers and strangers who are inspired by our efforts to give back and are willing to help bring awareness to the TYM mission. You can say my family, friends, team and followers are my unsung heroes and they have made this journey one worthwhile. Shoutout to the Rett Syndrome Organization for partnering with me as we work to bring awareness to this rare genetic neurological disorder. I would also like to give a special shoutout to my sister Tyler who has been the drive and purpose behind TYM Botanicals, without her tenacity I would not be inspired to face my fears daily. A special thank you to my mom who is always willing to test my products before they go to market.
