We had the good fortune of connecting with Leo Photographer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leo, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe there are 3 key factors behind my success. The first is Passion! Passion for what you do is super important. More than 20 years ago, I decided to become a photographer. When I decided this, my parents were very concerned and thought I would end up being unsuccessful. They suggested something with more security like an accountant, doctor, or lawyer, and because of this, I tried every job under the sun. I never could quite quit photography though and would do it wherever I could fit it. This included 2A.M. Edits and shoots before class on a regular basis. One day I realized while taking an exam for what my parents deemed as my steady career, that there’s no way I wanted to be in this profession any longer. I stood up and walked over to the professor with my exam in hand, and screamed I QUIT. Then walked out and never returned. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I realized what I wanted to do as my career was something I was truly passionate about. That was and always will be photography. The second factor to my success is believing you must work hard! Most people believe when owning their own business, they be working the hours and days they want. What they don’t understand is if you want to be successful and own a business, you have to work HARD HARD HARD! Most days you wake up and go to sleep focusing on your work. Its long hours so if you’re going to go through with it, it has to be something you love, and that you’re ok with doing day and night. You have to work hard to create that reality from your passion.
The third factor is something I call “making it happen”. That’s a point of view of Responsibility. Things don’t just happen to you; you create your reality. You are your own cause and effect! When you have to deliver, whether it’s a shoot or what have you, you MUST deliver. People depend on us to show up and be there on time as a professional. It doesn’t matter what’s going on with the weather, and it doesn’t matter if I broke my thumb the night before, people know they can count on me to make it happen. I maintain that level of dependability always, because that is my responsibility to my clients.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I can visualize quickly and create spectacular visuals from very limited resources and time. I love grabbing beauty In the moment and resolving any issues quickly so I can have multiple amazing shots, instead of just one. Ive refined that skill over my 17 years here in south Florida, and it sets me apart from any others.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shout out some of my past mentors from Buenos Aires, Argentina. First would be Lito Sallago who has passed, but was also a great teacher to me. He was the one who introduced me to photography, and the love for the dark room. He let me play with framing so we could get beautiful unedited natural shots. Next would be Gustavo Castro who was a brilliant mentor and teacher! He was someone who passed on the tools you needed while also challenging you to come up with your own independent decisions. Finally there is Fernando Dvoskyn who was an editor I previously worked with. He taught me how to tell a story with lighting. These men have played a major role in who I am as a photographer today.
