We had the good fortune of connecting with Kari Camacho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kari, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Flashback to summer of 2015, we booked a trip with our best friends to South America and dove into our passion of photojournalism. Our love for photography grew more than we ever thought it could. Upon our return our friends and family noted on how remarkable our talents were and that is what really moved us to start our own business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We are two best friends who built a business together. A business that revolves around human connections which is what we love most. We’re both dreamers, the annoying kind that quite literally live in the clouds. We love to create relationships with people and have been admired for our upbeat energy and vast skill set. Being a professional photographer in todays world where most images hold their worth in a tiny box displayed on a social media page is tough. We strive for our work to be printed or framed, to live outside of a screen. Our satisfaction comes from our clients and their loved ones when they look at our work and are flooded with emotion because what they felt was not only captured but displayed it in a way they could’ve never imagined. Our biggest challenges are presented to us often- the balancing act that comes with having a family, and running a business. Making schedules and adjusting them due to circumstances like providing quality care for our tiny humans, working through a global pandemic, and making decisions for shifts in weather to name a few. Most tend to think being a photographer revolves around taking beautiful photos but thats more like the silver lining. There are countless hours of work put in behind the scenes, “in the office” but in our case, as we both are mothers to small children, it is often at the oddest hours of the day or night. The biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is learn to communicate clearly, make a plan even if it gets sidetracked, and above all- go out of your comfort zone!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in the city happen to be where nature is the most untouched. These spots in specific, I keep secret for my very special clients!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jennifer Castro, co-owner and my best friend whom which I could not have done any of this without. My husband Nicolas Serrano, for his endless support.
To all our friends and families who contuniously provide mentorship, love, and encouragement.
