We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Pastran and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
“I really hope this works out,” but in all honesty, it started as a hobby that developed into a business. I started with cutting boards, some small pieces of furniture and have been able to work my way up to bigger projects. Like custom barn doors and even camper van build-outs these days. So in the beginning it was a simple wish to turn something I’m passionate about into a business and I’m happy to say it has worked out for the best.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Nowadays I am making furniture pieces and Camper van build-outs but it did not start out like that. I started my woodworking business after working in an accounting office for a few years. I left the office in hopes of finding a better work/life balance and with intention of finding a remote accounting job that would let me do that. However, the ones I was holding out for all ended up falling through. So after two months without much luck, I decided to take a chance and start Fuzzys Woodworking as more of a way to make a living. I still do some accounting work but nowadays I would rather be in the shop making something than sitting at a desk. Thankfully with the pandemic, I was able to expand Fuzzys Woodworking over the last year or so and I am very excited for the next steps in expanding the business/builds further.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Would have to recommend Lincolns Beard Brewery or Tattoos and Tacos if in the Kendall area. Obviously have to hit Versailles for Cuban food and spend some time in Little Havana exploring. Then have to spend a day or night in the Wynwood area to visit all the places there and end with some delicious food at 1-800 Lucky.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Family and friends have been a huge part of my success. My parents were nice enough to give me space to develop my woodworking skills. While my friends were nice enough to trust me to build some pretty cool commissions. For example, I got to build a puzzle coffee table for a friend so his significant other could do puzzles in the living room and then put a cover over things so pieces weren’t in the way. Without either of them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
