We had the good fortune of connecting with Cash Dallas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cash, how do you think about risk?
Taking risk has been everything. Often times people forget that doing your passion means going against what society deems as proper. We’re so often told to, “be whatever you want to be” in life but then told there’s certain guidelines to be it. Never is your passion good enough for people at the beginning and that alone is a risk. Daily, I risk being criticized by my family and peers for choosing such an unconventional path. A path that the see as unsafe. The risk to leave my 9-5 and work odd jobs to maintain time for my craft has upset many. The irony is, they don’t even know the gravity of some of the other risks I’ve had to make to get to where I am. I am a firm believer of the “no reward without risk,” model.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art, as most art, is a reflection of me. I’m different, not only because of my demeanor, but because of the presence I give when in a room. I’ve known this for a while; I command attention. Not in a forceful or demanding way, but a tactful intriguing way. A friend of mine recently called me a “calm exhilaration” and I believe all that to be the same for my music. I set myself apart, so my music sets itself a part.

Was it easy to get to where I am today? No, not at all, but I am beyond proud of my progress. I was able to get here because of persistence not talent. So many people have come to me recently saying I have so much talent and they could never do what I do. I laugh because I still believe that they could never do what I do and that’s not because of a lack in talent, it’s a lack in drive. I developed a skill not a talent. I’ve spent nights, sitting at home writing, recording, and singing, while they spent nights, drinking, partying, and dancing. One may be a lot more fun, but it won’t develop a skill.

The challenges I had to face are many. I’m blessed to be here today. I remember when I decided to make music, I was a freshman in college on scholarship for athletics. That winter, we had to stay on campus to train and so the school was going to pay us a stipend to be able to feed ourselves. I took that $500 and bought a mic, an interface, and software to record. I didn’t eat the next two weeks. I learned early that I was about sacrifice to gain what you want, and I chose the future over the present misfortunes. I remember eating my roommate’s food and lying saying I didn’t because I didn’t have the money to pay him back. One of the white boys who heard that I did it said it was a “nig&* thing to do”. To this day I don’t regret it. I want the world to know and see me as a man who’s willing to sacrifice for the people and things that I love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Most anyone who’s coming down here to visit will be here to kick it in the studio, so the first night we’re buying drinks, inviting people to the studio and just drinking and vibing in a creative space. Next night, we have to go to my favorite third-party studio, Bay8, to chill with my boys Matt and Randy and record. Next, we will have to visit some of the local spots to go out at: Bar Rita, Bodega, The wharf, Sway. All places to hit up and drink at for the night. Then I would have to take them to some of my favorite restaurants in the area; Phat Boy Sushi, Bombay Darbar, Cuba Libre, Morton’s Steakhouse, Red Door, Sushi Garage…the list goes on. Finally, I would have to take them to all the beaches. I know you asked for an itinerary, but honestly, I think the best thing would to just play it by ear. There are so many things to do here in Fort Lauderdale.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s an unbelievable amount of people who’ve created me and deserve credits! I won’t be able to shout out all of them, but I’ll start with my beautiful mother who’s made me and then move to my beautiful stepmother who’s raised me. Both have given me an insane amount of effort over the years and I truly wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the. After that I want to say thank you to my selfless manager Rudjeri Joseph for making a lot happen for me in the past 3 months alone. I’m truly blessed. As far as literature goes, I read often and every book has helped me be who I am today in some way. I really enjoyed the 48 Laws to Power and have been studying that text lately. I think that has help shape my patience and planning for the future and upcoming goals.
