We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Morse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I am a self-taught cake artist who loves all things food! I opened Sprinkl’d Cakes Sugar Studio in December of 2014 and it has hit the ground running since. Officially leaving my career in nursing in 2017 to stay home with my daughter, who is a T1D(Type One Diabetic) has made for great conversations. But, it is the real motivation behind how I got into Cake Decorating. My creativity knows no boundaries. I’ve always had a tenacious eye for the arts and science. As a kid, I loved experimenting with food in the kitchen or drawing and doodling on everything. Including the mayor’s Christmas card! Which, to my surprise, landed me a hot seat on a scissor lift with WPB Mayor Nancy M. Graham. Where I was honored by lighting the Giant Christmas Tree, at the annual Clematis by Night Tree Lighting. It’s those facets that have streamlined my skills, to appreciate how flavors and colors collaborate to be able to bring a cohesive vision and style to each cake.
Art as a whole; Colors, textures, and shapes, is quite literally the driving force behind my business. I think that’s the reason why I’ve fallen so in love with cake is that it blends various art techniques and science in challenging ways. You’re definitely forced to think outside the box with the countless mediums (Isomalt, buttercream, fondant, gum paste, etc.). Their ability to change with heat or liquids is like mixing science, art, and a “sprinkle” of math into a career. That’s when I knew I couldn’t have ever dreamed of all this caking world has brought me, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I have a boutique-style approach to confectionery creations that combines warmth and love with the expertise of a professional baker. I exclusively work with all-natural ingredients and emphasize gorgeous aesthetics. But it’s not just about “looks”! Behind every stunning show-stopping, jaw-dropping cake is hours of hard work, dedication, and even more sleepless nights. When a client is placing an order it’s never been just a cake to me. It’s the centerpiece of their event; on the day she says, “I do” to the man she loves or a baby’s first birthday.
Whether I’m texting customers for two minutes on a simple order or sitting down to coffee with a bride to be both clients receive the same level of creativity and attention. I find that I’m much more successful when I can connect with them and express that I care. Although my cakes taste better than they look I wholeheartedly think that it’s because of the relationships I build with all clientele that distances are no match for my discerning client’s intent on having one of my sought after confections. One of my adored clients traveled all the way from Canada just for a “Just Because” bite.
Through it all, I’ve discovered that the most important aspect is building relationships. The essence of these characteristics has been the cornerstone of my continued success. It’s been a crazy ride thus far. So many ups and downs but I have a mental health “RULE”, Pause.. Breathe (cry if you must).. But NEVER give up! It’s not always going to be easy but the best things in life don’t come that way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Thankfully, my best friend is a foodie too! She’s always right down the street from me. So, when we have a getaway we are all about food. We are always on a hunt for small local restaurants/ food trucks to try! El Rucon Food Truck, Grandview Public Market, and Sushi Bang Bang are our favorite stops for food and good drinks. Both of us love to be pampered and shop! Facials at Maybelle Beauty Bar or spa days at Eau Palm Beach. A little crystal shopping at The Jamar Enlightenment Center, or wandering around the shops and Green Market downtown is always a must.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Alivia, my mini-me. You are the one who has helped me to grow in life and business! You were my favorite taste tester. Now you’re my mad scientist helping me find new recipes to help families and friends celebrate despite any allergies or illnesses. Sprinkl’d Cakes Sugar Studio wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for you.
