We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Wilcox and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
In late 2016, I founded Women Count USA: Femicide Accountability Project after I discovered there was no comprehensive tracking or documentation of women and girls murdered by men in the United States. I didn’t wait for permission to begin doing this important work no one else was undertaking at that time.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was the first person to graduate from college in my immediate family, and have been a registered nurse since 1995. I was not able to attend university until I was 23 and no one in my family was able to help or guide me through the process. I am proud to have excelled academically and professionally in a challenging career through my own grit and resilience. My work with Women Count USA has taught me that collaboration and being willing to mentor and lift up others leads to new opportunities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am not in Miami, but look forward to visiting one day! I live near Dallas, Texas and love visiting Klyde Warren Park and the nearby museums.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the families and friends of murdered women and girls whose lives I wish to honor through my work.
