We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Levis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandra, how do you think about risk?
When thinking about the different risks I’ve taken in my life/career, I tend to frame it as “what kind of opportunity does this present me with?” I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to pursue entrepreneurship from a place of opportunity– not scarcity– so it did not feel like a big risk. The worst case scenario was that my business wouldn’t be viable and I would go back on the job hunt. I recognize this is not the norm for many and I’m very grateful to be able to define the word “risk” for myself with a sense of optimism instead of fear.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I founded and operate a marketing/public relations agency dedicated to the asset management space, or the business of managing other people’s money. I started it in 2013 with a laptop in my childhood bedroom in Miami after working in New York City at an investment management firm. Getting the agency going was grind-y and totally consuming and not at all glamorous– but I loved it.

I was a one-woman band for a while. Today, we are a team of individuals with backgrounds in finance, design, media, copywriting, project management, web development and PR. I’m most proud of seeing how far we’ve come as a company. We were recently named “Best US Public Relations and Communications Firm” for the ETF (exchange-traded fund) industry, which is the vertical we most service.

I’m also excited about how our industry is becoming more mainstream (everyone is investing or talking about investing). Its part of the national discourse…or at least the social media one. When I started doing this over 10 years ago it was pretty obscure and only relevant for a certain segment of the population. Now I’m seeing TikTok videos and IG stories about how to invest and its pretty cool!

Industries change…..even the stodgiest ones. If you pay attention, you will see pockets of opportunity and the ability to come in an disrupt an aspect of it. I’d like our agency to be known as a disruptor and connector in our industry.

Over the years, I’ve learned to listen to my gut. I had a gut feeling an agency in this space would do well. Everyone I’ve hired has also passed the “gut” test. I’ve also learned that if you are willing to put in the time and get scrappy, you don’t need a lot of money to test an idea for a business.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Witnessing Miami’s transformation over the years has been crazy. It’s always been a destination but now it has really ramped up its offerings. Here’s some of my favorite places:

See:
-Design district (grab a coffee and people watch)
-Wynwood (check out the boutiques and art galleries)
-Miami beach (walk around Collins and hit up the sand)
-Little Havana (un cortadito at Versailles is a must, as is a walk along Calle Ocho)
-Key Biscayne (take in the view from the bridge)

Eat/Drink:
-The Citadel Miami
-Strawberry Moon at the Goodtime hotel
-The Freehand Hotel outdoor bar
-Macchialina in Miami Beach
-Vista Restaurant in Miami
-The Delano for overpriced drinks but old school Miami Beach glamour
-Dante’s HiFi bar

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout goes to my dad for supporting me on my entrepreneurship journey 100%. From hiring advice to accounting help and everything in between he has always been there to lend a hand (or ear). Access to his own experience as a company founder has been invaluable for me. There is a new lesson to learn every single day. Being a business owner is really hard and I’m so lucky to have a mentor who has been in the trenches as well.
