We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, what do you attribute your success to?
The biggest factor that sets my business apart from other businesses in my industry is the personal connection. We prioritize the human aspect of what we do in order to connect with our clients on a more intimate level. We want to know why someone has the money habits they have, it helps us create a process that works well for them. We talk about our clients history around money, their comfort level in different areas, their concerns and really focus on delivering results that will set them up for success. Most of our clients are people who do not feel comfortable in a traditional accounting firm. They do not want a once a year transaction, they want a year round partnership.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started off on a very traditional path. I went to work for a firm, I studied and passed my CPA exams and expected to live my life in a corporate role for my entire career. I was successful, I was earning a comfortable salary but I started feeling like I was missing something. I found I was missing the human interaction, the feeling that what I was doing was helping my clients in real time. That was when I decided I was going to start my own firm and do it the way I wanted to do it.
One of the hardest lessons I had to learn was boundaries. I wanted to be everything to everyone, all the time. I had to create boundaries, enforcing them and not apologizing for them. I came to realize that by sticking to my boundaries I am able to be the best version of myself, which means I am the best for my clients.
The biggest development lately is our addition of a podcast and digital courses. I still find that there are so many people who do not know where to go to get good advice. I decided to create a library of digital content that makes sound advice available to more people. It has been so rewarding to be able to reach more people and make an impact on them in a way that is also sustainable for me personally.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hands down, Wynwood. I love the vibe of the area, the color, the food, the people. It is so vibrant and full of life. Home to my favorite coffee shop, taco joint and the ice cream shop that my kids eat for breakfast every time we visit. Being in Wynwood makes me feel alive.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Erin Martin is my partner in Glambar, she has been instrumental in helping me move from a rigid, corporate version of myself into someone who embraces her feelings. This has helped me understand my own goals as well as help propel my clients forward by being able to understand where they are coming from.
I also have an incredible husband and group of friends who never make me feel bad for my drive and determination. My Executive Assistant keeps me on the right path, without her I would be completely lost.
