We had the good fortune of connecting with Bryhana Chrystina and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bryhana, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
For the simple reason of creation. As creators we have this crazy cool superpower to be able to have the smallest of ideas spiral into these beautiful and emotion invoking visions. From which then we can bring them to life and others can enjoy. The entire process is beautiful. From the moment the idea is born, to the time invested in brining the idea to life, to having others appreciate and share your art, to having other creatives want to work with you because they like your work. Besides that, I love colors and learning new techniques. A good amount of times, I have been on a shoot and have had to come up with a new technique on how to apply a product or come up with a completely different look on the spot, which makes it that much more fun. I get to learn while I’m doing what I love most. Creating.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This entire journey has been far from easy. I am currently still on this incredible journey and I believe I always will be, as we are always learning and evolving. As of now, I think one thing I like to think that sets me apart is that I do not like putting my artistry in a box or type. I really enjoy thinking of ways to take a classic technique or look, and completely changing it to push myself and my artistry to the next level. Its better that way, in my opinion. You really get to see how much you can experiment and learn from removing these artistry standards that can sometimes be too plain. A huge part of that has been finding the confidence to do so, though. When I was first starting off with makeup, I would put these crazy expectations on a look and everything had to be perfect. So unrealistic. Especially when I learned that 95% of artists I was idolizing and basing my techniques from, were using photoshop to correct and conceal certain mistakes. Which is totally fine, but I didn’t want to be that artist. I want to be the artist that I was searching for as a beginner. Someone who can inspire another artist to say “Okay cool, that’s different and its not perfect. Let me try and put my own spin on it!”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Of course, I would take them to one of my favorite places to eat. Organic Food Kings is this vegan food truck in Miami that has amazing food and is always a good vibe. Wynwood would definitely be on the list of places to go because it’s always fun seeing the art along the walls while either grabbing food or shopping. There is also this really cute farmers market in Hollywood called Yellow Green that I’m obsessed with so I would absolutely have to make a stop there. It’s hard to say though, because I am the type of person that has such a good time anywhere I go. Especially when you live somewhere where there are always things to do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and most importantly, I have to take this moment to thank God for the blessings he has and continues to place in my life. Truly, I give Him all the glory for bringing me to where I am and where I will go. Apart from God, my uncle Emmanuel Roldan is a key reason for me becoming a makeup artist and falling in love with the craft and creativity behind it all. Because he has been in the industry for 20+ years, he taught and continues to teach me so much of what I know in regard to technique, color, complexion, and mastery of makeup artistry. Another person and one of my favorite creatives who has truly changed my life and continuously supports me is Melody Timothee, otherwise known as @mel.visuals. She’s been the person I run to when I feel overwhelmed about an idea, the person who can single-handedly snap me back into reality when I need it and my best friend through and through. There are plenty others I would love to name but these three are the most essential in why and how I am the artist I am today.
