We had the good fortune of connecting with Martine Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Martine, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I actually believe striving for balance is a trap we can easily fall into. When you look at one of those vintage scales of justice in order to balance you must have equal portions on each side to achieve balance. Life doesn’t work like that especially as a Mompreneur! I work with my clients to strive for harmony vs balance. When you think of an orchestra there are some instruments that are big and play really loud, and others who are small and play softer but together there is harmony! There are seasons where my family time needs to play a little louder than my business time and vice versa but the goal isn’t balance but to create a harmonious rhythm that keeps what matters most out front! We don’t find time for what matters most, we make time for what matters most!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
About 5 years into growing my business to a six-figure business and one of the top leaders in the company I found myself a little lost. I was preparing a training for my team from the book The Success Principles by Jack Canfield which I highly recommend and it was asking us to set goals for the 10 key areas of our life. Things like business, finances, family etc and I was able to set goals for all of them except for the area of hobby and recreation. See what started out as a hobby and a way to get that “girl time” so my husband could enjoy his hobbies guilt-free, quickly became a wildly successful business. I remember sitting on the couch and looking at my husband with tears in my eyes asking him how is it that I can set goals in all those areas but couldn’t think of one thing I would like to do just for me for fun? I had built a successful business but lost myself in the process. After getting myself back on track, I started noticing other women with the same lost look on their faces and felt called to help them. I believe our past struggles become our present purposes. Today I mentor Momprenuers so that they can win at work without losing at home. To establish healthy boundaries so they can build a successful business without losing themselves in the process! As your CEO, Chief Encouragement Officer, I also host my own podcast ,The Mompreneur Life Remixed podcast ,to share my knowledge, inspiring stories from other Mompreneurs and to help burnout-proof your life and business! ” Your career is what you’re paid for, you’re calling is what you are made for” Steve Harvey. I was made to encourage, mentor, train and speak life over women whether it be by private mentorships, speaking at women’s events, my podcast or just on my social platforms. I was made for this and nothing brings me more joy then seeing hope and confidence restored to a Mompreneur!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I am a true local to the area as well as my husband so we would go to all our local favorites up and down the coast of Myrtle Beach like Flamingo Grill and Sun City which has the best margaritas in town. During the day of course we would hit the beach to hunt for sharks teeth which is my favorite thing to do at the beach and maybe even do some bodysurfing. However would spend the majority of our time about 20 miles south on the water being creek ratz in Murrells Inlet where we currently live. The sunsets are amazing, the seafood on the Marsh Walk is the best around and live music is always being played! If the weather permits we would take a trip offshore to catch some grouper and maybe even Mahi Mahi! When you live here you have lots of visitors so that about sums up our usual itinerary!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is a tough one because there are so many people, organizations, podcasts and books who deserve so much recognition for my success today. However, let’s go back to the beginning. The mess before the success! I was a small town girl living in a lonely world because my husband had lots of hobbies like fishing, golfing, hunting etc. I didn’t really have any hobbies and most of my friends no longer lived in my home town so having some “girl time” wasn’t easy to come by. I became a bitter wife who resented my husband for the relationships he had and the hobbies he enjoyed. At the time, we had one child and so my days were all about being a mom and a wife ( which I loved) but I found myself making my husband feel guilty every time he would go enjoy time with his friends! So what does a woman do when she is bitter with her husband….she calls a friend to complain. Thankfully I had a spiritual mentor that I called and she said something that changed the course of my life. After complaining about how wrong my husband was for leaving me on a Saturday AGAIN to go hunting…she simply said. “He is not wrong Martine, you need to find something to do!” Well you can imagine the silence on my end of the phone after she said that. I was expecting her to agree with me but she told me what I needed to hear and not what I wanted to hear. That statement changed everything. It reminded me of my responsibility to create my own joy in life and anything extra is a bonus. That statement is what led me to start pursuing my own hobbies and eventually start my own business and the rest they say is history! Pat is still my mentor today. because I firmly believe we all need those people who will tell us the truth in love, expose our blindspots and encourage us along the journey! Who knows where I would be, if I would still be married ( celebrating 22 years this year) or be a successful entrepreneur today without Pat’s willingness to be real with me! So this shout out goes to Pat!
