We had the good fortune of connecting with Selinet Pereira and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Selinet, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued this artistic career because it is what makes me happy. I have helped people find beauty in themselves they’ve never seen before and it’s truly an honor to be behind that artistic brush. I have also always been a creative person through painting and drawing. It just evolved into the form of makeup over the years. I guess this career was also my way of pursuing my dreams since I almost went to college to become a doctor only to please my peers and family. I convinced my self that I wanted to go into the medical field, but something just never felt right. I realized it wasnt my dream, so here I am. Finally pursuing my dream career. A career where I feel free to express myself artistically.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From Proms & Quinceañeras to doing special effects makeup for a commercial, my journey has been an adventure. I became a student at Cosmix School of makeup artistry in January 2022 and will graduate in October 2022. I’ve been able to recieve professional gigs from them and have so far done 2-3 fashion shows (Fort lauderdale fahsion week, a Macy’s fashion show & Miami Swim Week) in which me and my work were published in Fort Lauderdale’s Fashion week Magazine recently. Very proud of what I have accomplished as a student and can’t wait to see what will come once I graduate. But, it can be hard sometimes since theres already so many good makeup artist out there, so Im constantly practicing and pushing my self out of my comfort zone to be a respected artist. Your attitude represents you more than your craft. Being patient & valuing yourself properly is key to success in this industry. As a makeup is also important to hold your ground in the sense of respect since many will try to take advantage of your talents in the beginning. I love everything in my career and I hope that my talents & story impact another young girl or boy who aspire to reach this level. The sky is not just the limit when there’s footprints on the moon.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Im currently staying around the fort lauderdale area, so I would definitely take my best friend to the numerous beautiful beaches here. We could walk around the Dania Mall and go into its amazing Regal movie theater where you can dine and watch a movie. There’s also Project Rock, a rock climbing place in Oakland Park, since my best friend loves an adventure. Rght after we can go eat ice cream at Artesanal (The Craftman) an amazing ice cream place with mexican culture ice cream. Around 10 minutes of this place is also Wilton Manors which we could walk around and dine at the amazing New York Grilled Cheese. We can also go thrift shopping at Out of the closet, very popular thrift shop which is found in Wilton Manors, too. We could also make a quick drive to Butterfly World, a beautiful botanical garden in Coconut Creek, FL. There’s also a mini butterfly garden at The Alchemist who sells the best iced coffee and La Mexicana for its deals on Ceviches, which is next to The Alchemist. Lastly, we can relax at my place, watch a movie, and doordash any of the restaurants mentioned.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my Mom for always pushing me to do what makes me happy and for teaching me what is to be a strong woman in this world. My dad who from a long distance in a different part of the world is always supporting my decisions and showing off my work anywhere he goes. A shoutout to my bestfriend, Cheyanne for not only supporting my dreams, but also for always being my model when I wanted to do an artistic makeup. Lastly, a huge credit of my artistic inspirations goes to Guillermo del Toro’s Pans Labyrinth and Clive Barker’s Hellraiser for inspiring me to want to work in films as a special effects makeup artist.
