Meet Kayla Locarno | Licensed Esthetician/Skin Care Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Locarno and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue an artistic/creative career because I learned in life that you did not necessarily need to obtain a degree to make more money or be more successful. For instance, I went to get my degree as an Elementary Educator because teaching kids is what I have always loved. But ultimately, the lack of support from the school district and financially, it isn’t how I wanted to live the rest of my life – living by paycheck to paycheck, working up to 3 jobs to stay afloat and sometimes it wasn’t nearly enough although this was always a passion of mine.

Around the beginning of the pandemic, many people around the world found their passion, turned their hobbies into a business and they just went for it! I loved that this moment in life was like de-stigmatizing the “traditional job” or having to have a degree to be successful. I’d definitely encourage high schoolers to keep an open mind about going to college and pursue their dreams but I want people to understand that if you don’t go that route, it’s completely fine! There are so many other things you could pursue that will make you successful.

Skin care is a whole different passion of mine which is very different from being with kids and teaching lol. As a teen, I found myself doing research on skincare, seeing what different skin type there is and researching the ingredients and how they work with each skin type. As I was formulating a skin care regime for myself, my mom and friends came to me for help. The anatomy of the skin sparked interest in wanting to become a skincare therapist. I felt empowered to help others achieve their skincare goals and feeling more confident in their own unique skin!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Licensed Skin Care Therapist who specializes in several facial treatments. There’s a facial for all skin types, skin concerns, ages, and gender!

I am proud of how far I have gotten and the hard work I have put it to be where I am today! I am beyond excited for what the future holds and for me to look back in a couple of years and see my personal growth. I got where I am today professionally through perseverance! I truly just went for it and didn’t think of how I was going to do it, I made it happen without giving up. It wasn’t an easy road. It took a lot of trial and error, getting turned down, failing at things, hard work but how I overcame these hard challenges was to not give up and having a support system helping you and cheering you on.
I have learned along the way that not everyone wants to see you doing good and definitely not doing better than them even if you’re cheering for them!

Also, you have to try even if you fail, even if you to re-adjust how to do something. You never want to be stuck with the thought “But what if I did try that?”.

What I want people to know about myself and my brand is that it is a place where I want you to come in feeling more confident than when you first came in. I want you to know there is going to be a fix for the skin concerns you have. I’m all about helping you achieve your skincare goals!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting, first place I would take her to is Lush Skin Beauty Studio for a skin care treatment to get her pampered up! Would definitely take her to the beach, get some drinks and go jet skiing!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost I want to shoutout my mom who is my absolute biggest supporter in everything that I do! The one that has been there through my ups and downs through this venture. I love you!

I want to give a shout-out to Dermalogica! After many failed attempts on results on my skin through drug store products, I turned to Dermalogica, many, many, years before I became a Licensed Esthetician. I saw the results, I loved the line how it is super friendly and safe for all skin types! I also loved that Dermalogica is women founded and owned!

I also want to give a shout-out to so many Licensed Estheticians that have inspired me through their passion in skincare and how important it is to be unique in a world where while many of us can be in the same field, we can all win regardless! I appreciate the mentorship of few Estie’s that have helped, taught, and encouraged to learn more and to not be afraid to try! There’s very few Estie’s that are willing to share their knowledge with a fellow Estie to help elevate them!
