We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katrina, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want my legacy to be that I have redefined the narrative on beautiful. I want women, girls and even families to view themselves as beautiful despite their circumstance. For so long, society has defined beauty based on our physical appearance rather than who we were created to be. By changing the narrative, women, girls and families can walk with confidence regardless of whether they are dressed in their Sunday’s best or a pair of torn jeans or even sweatpants. Society has gotten the definition of beautiful so wrong and I want the world to see beautiful.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My company, Unbreakable Memories, started out of me creating wine glasses for a group of friends that had inspirational wording on them. I wanted to give them little reminders of the amazing women that they are. From there, I started creating more drinkware and t-shirts that inspired and motivated. One day when sitting back and thinking about purpose (something about getting close to 40 lol), I realized that it was time to figure out what I wanted to do in life to give me that ultimate aha moment. During my prayer time, God reminded me that I was the encourager. You see, I didn’t think that was enough. I was looking for this glamorous “role” because I was comparing myself to others and thinking that it had to be more. But He had to remind me that even the greatest roles need encouragement. As I continued creating products, God took it a step further and Hello My Name is Beautiful™ was born to change the narrative on beautiful and redefine what society calls beautiful. This movement is for every woman one who has questioned who she is, it’s for every women who believed their trials defined them, it’s for every woman who believed their worth was defined by who loved or accepted them and most importantly it’s for every woman who believed their outer beauty (clothes, hair, makeup) dictated whether you were beautiful.
Taking this journey has not been easy because who wants to share their struggles and fears! In order for me to inspire beautiful, I had to heal some stuff. I had to peel back my own layers and really ask who is Katrina when the mask is removed. I couldn’t inspire other women if I wasn’t feeling beautiful myself. I had to get vulnerable, raw and transparent with myself. I know that it’s not easy to do but it was so necessary. You can’t heal what you don’t reveal! The beautiful thing about this journey and using my voice to share my own struggles is what God is using to allow other women to see themselves as beautiful. We are changing the narrative one beautiful at a time!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t particularly have a favorite place in my city. I absolutely love the water so any place that has a beach or waterfall is my favorite place. It’s something about the peace and serenity that comes from the waves crashing. With each wave that comes in, I receive all of what is attached to me. With each wave that goes out, I release those things that no longer serve me.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, God gets a shoutout! He’s taking my struggle of accepting my beautiful and turning it into purpose to inspire other women, girls and families to see their beautiful. I want to thank my mentors, Dr. Vikki Johnson and Alycia Johnson for helping me understand what was within me to inspire beautiful. I want to thank my parents (Lisa and Joe) for showing me what I am made up of. I want to thank my husband, Andre, for being patient with me while I uncover the hidden parts of me and accepting all of me. I want to thank my children Kaila, Arianna and Nicholas for showing me what unconditional love and forgiveness is all about.
