Meet April Nicole | Musician / Photographer / Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with April Nicole and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?

Dismissing art and ignoring my creativity has never been an option for me. I’m driven by a desire to create beautiful things, to collaborate with fellow humans, to share experiences, to activate spaces, and to inspire.

I’ve never been good with numbers, mathematics, sciences, or remembering dates. I dread the idea of having a strict routine, or spending too much time sitting isolated in front of a computer. I’m a social person with lots of energy! Art is simply in my nature. And, though it has taken some time to figure out how to make it work, I feel good building a career that is aligned with my natural passions and skills.

I mean, let’s be real. I get to take photos, make videos, and play music FOR A LIVING. I’m grateful for every opportunity I have to create, connect, and grow.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I consider myself a bit of a “Renaissance woman”. I love art in all of its forms and I like to dabble where I feel called. Trying new things helps me keep my “inner child” alive. Many people have told me that I should choose ONE skill to focus all my energy on. But, that doesn’t work for me. I crave variety and change all the time. So, for me, it’s an absolute pleasure to work as a professional musician, photographer, and videographer (while occasionally dabbling in painting, dancing, and other interests on the side).

Regardless of what it is, I put my heart in everything that I do.

Music has been my pure passion since I was a child. I’ll never NOT be a musician. It’s always been my calling. Performing with a live band and engaging with appreciative audiences is the absolute best. The stage just feels like home to me.

Photography is a passion I developed a bit later in life. I spent 6 years living in Rome, Italy. The city was so beautiful, I couldn’t stop taking photos of it! So I eventually started photographing friends, then models, events, and more. I have always had an eye for aesthetics and I love meeting new people and helping them feel confident in front of the camera – so this job is very rewarding for me.

Videography is my latest creative career venture. I love that it allows me to mix the visual aspects of photography with the audio elements of music. I still have a lot to learn in this realm, but I’m happy to be making progress to realize some ambitious ideas I have for the future!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Miami has certainly changed a lot since I arrived in 2019. Covid hit some of my favorite small business hard enough that they eventually had to close (R.I.P. Oak Garden & Las Rosas).

As an entrepreneur, an active member of the local arts community, and a big fan of spending time outdoors, I most love supporting small businesses with open-air areas and live music. The Center for Subtropical Affairs, Gramps, Low Key, The Cleat, The Anderson, Lagniappe, and Bar Nancy are some of my favorite go-to spots.

And, of course, the beach.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my “Shoutout” to the creative community in Miami! I have never felt so welcomed and inspired by a city. I came to Miami in 2019 and was immediately welcomed with open arms. Since then, I’ve build forever friendships with some of the most inspiring and supportive people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. There’s so much energy, passion, and determination amongst artists here. I am proud to be a part of this scene – and look forward to continued growth alongside my peers.
